The country's pride in its renewed era

Will remain entwined with Ahmad's memory.

What can console his nation for his loss, and is there

Any consolation for a mother bereft of her only son?

Had there been two Farqad stars in her heights, what she

Suffers would be lighter, and one Farqad would console her.

A star whose light streamed from his lofty height,

And lit the horizons of a darkened age.

His radiance scatters into colors, and in

That branching lies a strength never known before.

And genius may distribute among adornments

The varied forms of its blazing inspiration.

It is a wonder, their source within it being one,

That they differ despite their common source.

Alas for Egypt, bereft of one whose loss

Is a calamity that, even if I count it, defies counting.

Fate descended upon him, striking down a scholar

    Outstanding, and a peerless accountant;

    وَبِمُفْصِحٍ مَا قَالَ غَيْرَ الْجيِّد

    And a writer who fashioned only the choicest;

    And an eloquent speaker who said only what was fine;

And a master of management, who tended all he tended

With moderation, yet was lavish in exhausting toil.

Affairs reveal their essence to his eyes,

And every knot is unraveled before him.

Consider his fine qualities, and his share

Of them all—the share of the most honored, most glorious.

The character of one capable, forbearing, resolute,

Generous, upright in his course, lofty in his purpose.

His radiance guides the path of every learned person

Whom the world has wronged and left without guidance.

And every seeker of aid receives from him

A share, whenever it is asked, 'Is there anyone to help?'

He meets you with open cheer, while, in

Your awe of him, you stand before a proud, thick-maned lion.

How silent he was, how steadfast his heart,

In the distress of a calamity that raises men and lays them low!

He aided industry and agriculture, extending

Hand after hand to improve the condition of both.

He fostered institutions of the economy, and they blossomed,

And in their great numbers fulfilled aspirations.

    وَمَضَى نَقِيّاً جَيبُهُ حُلْوَ الْيَد

    Egypt's treasuries were obedient to his fingertips;

And he departed, his pocket untainted, sweet of hand,

Save for some surplus from his lawful earnings,

In which tomorrow's sudden coming had not been reckoned.

    But for integrity—his dearest treasure—

He who enriched the people would not have died nearly penniless.

Oh, pity for one at rest against his will,

While resolve between his ribs had not died down!

Egypt was his love; no other passion distracted him from her.

So whenever she called, he answered and did not hesitate.

It made her heart bleed that he gave his own life

For love, while she had no ransom for her redeemer.

He lay at rest before his time; how many a glance

On the day he departed, from one bereaved and searching!

The crowds went forth to escort him; there were

Among them none but those who wept or sighed.

And the classes were equal in humble reverence; no

Scene was ever seen with the grandeur of that scene.

O departed one, death has come between us and you,

While souls cling to you, never to be driven away.

A people's keen sword, death sheathed you, though you were never

Sheathed in the days when they needed you.

And a meteor of the zenith, whose heights were stripped

Of the finest adornments a necklace-wearer bears.

Have you truly slept a peaceful sleep

That will last long, or is this a sleepless man's brief doze?

And did you spare your soul, or did it defy you, so that

The burdens of endless struggle were lifted from it?

Who imagined your secure seclusion a battlefield

Where you would meet a martyr's death?

You will live on through a name immortal in hearts,

Even if this body is not immortal.

And your son will complete what you began, supported

By the care of God, the Most High, the Mighty.

    O Ahmad's secret—life continues through succession—

What must you bear to preserve the noblest lineage?

How grievous for those near and far, that

You should be stricken by your father's loss from birth!

    وَانْبُغْ وَكُنْ زَيْنَ العُلَى وَالسُّؤْدَدِ

    Live for the homeland, and grow as a wholesome plant;

And excel, and be the adornment of greatness and nobility.
