She turned into the gardens in late afternoon, roaming them,

Like a queen touring the precincts of her dominion.

A beauty whom Beauty made sovereign; then began

The birds in her grove to declaim in her name.

And beauty at its most complete is youthfulness

In its beginning, and loveliness in its fullness.

She veiled her neck in fine green silk,

So her face resembled a rose within its calyx.

And she swayed in a leafy robe of silk and wool,

    Like a branch—yet has a branch her body's freshness?

And whenever she passed a flower on her way,

It longed to grasp her trailing hems and kiss her.

Or if she passed a tender, supple bough,

It bent its flank and leaned to embrace her.

And gazes cluster around her, pricking her

In her shyness, and piercing her in her imagination,

Like bees that circled a flower and stung it,

And sipped from it what they sipped, against its will.

Until, when weariness adorned her forehead

With dew and quenched an ember of her resolve,

She sat facing her mother, as though

Each of them sat opposite her own likeness.

But a storm swooped down suddenly,

With wild gusts from the winds' fierce strife and their dark dust.

Then the dusty earth shook, until a handshake joined

The tips of its spreading tree and the beds of its low-growing plants.

And the girl's braids scattered like clouds,

Hiding her star's face from every eye.

So she was at a loss what to try, having already

Found herself unable, without her mirror, to arrange them.

So she drew near to face her mother and gazed

Into her eyes, dispelling the cloud of her worry.

And so, when a girl seeks her mirror

And it is unavailable, she looks into her mother's eyes.
