    Rest peacefully, O luminaries.

Upon your soil be mercy and peace.

No wonder garments were rent after you

in the two Easts, and banners lowered.

Egypt, for whose sake you died, has become

as though joy within her were forbidden.

The dear ones are gone—Mustafa and his companions.

Scarcely does a year pass without a martyr.

Martyrs, whose last is not the least among them,

and each has a station among the immortals.

For God's sake, care for bereaved Egypt, whose heart—

within it, arrows follow the arrows of separation.

Abd al-Aziz, perhaps the death you were made to suffer

was the easiest thing you were ever made to bear.

You held your purpose too noble to heed death,

and resolved, with neither weakness nor surrender.

Death and holding back, among the things you fear,

are alike; the worse of them is holding back.

A lifetime spent in struggle: you never flagged

in it, nor did worldly dross distract you from it.

It is a sacred book, its verses the revelation of sacrifice,

and goodness is its opening and its close.

Its days are woven from the best of what

    daylight reveals and darkness conceals.

In love for Egypt and in pursuit of her advancement,

that heart and intellect were both awake.

Scarcely could you stay at ease in a place of safety

without a throng of life's vicissitudes around you.

Virtues attended you, whether you stayed

in a town or no abode could contain you.

That passionate love for Egypt was never approached

by anyone, and no love reached its extent.

On how many a journey were your vitals worn away

by illness, and your throat tormented by burning thirst!

When called, you rally, [apparently not] tiring, as though

pain itself gives you its own fierce strength.

In such trials, when souls are great,

spirits and bodies take opposing paths.

Glory is pleased with you, and so is the land that

you [relieved] of illness while you yourself were ill.

O you who have forsaken the pens, from grief

the pens almost poured forth their souls after you.

The Crescent grieved for the one who exalted its banner,

and Islam wept for the strongest of its defenders.

Who champions the upright faith as he did,

with judgment that pierces through when the blade is blunt?

Seeking guidance, whenever the paths of right were confused,

from a heart inspired by his Lord,

he aimed his thought toward the furthest reach,

and went on, undeterred by illusions.

And sound judgment is supported by wisdom

    untouched by confusion or obscurity.

He seeks only what is good; and some of it

is not understood equally by all minds.

Religion does not reject civilization when she calls:

an imam among the rightly guided answered her.

Its ease embraces the times; our age therefore has

its rulings, and other ages have other rulings.

Who will care for learning after the one who raised its standing?

Where is the sincere counselor, the expert, the deeply learned?

Who will spread learning, so their share is granted

from it to the noble, and the common folk are not refused?

In preaching and education you expend all

the powers of resolve bestowed upon you—and they are great.

You see a people's foundation in its morals:

have peoples any foundation without them?

    Without knowledge, you find

nations driven along as though they were cattle.

What can they be hoped to become, when they have

no grasp of the truth of their own affairs?

Who will sustain charitable aid, now that hospitality is delayed

within it, and the needy guest has lost its path?

Its bounty has dried up, and a refuge stands deserted

where sacred rights were guarded and honorable people protected.

At your departure, bereaved mothers renewed their mourning,

and orphans sank still deeper into orphanhood.

You maintained kinship ties, never prizing

worldly gain for whose sake those ties are severed.

Hold to the essences, and discard their outward attributes:

dust is not the same as all that lies above the dust.

Was any young man readier than you in the gravest crisis,

any free man, or any hero more decisive in affairs?

If those virtues and that intellect are held in honor,

what else could deserve such honor?

How admirable you are, and your radiant company, who

sought the highest honor and attained what they sought,

each one pleasing truth and lofty virtue

when he lay down, still a roaring lion.

O band of goodness, who have rested, having

fulfilled your resolves and earned your repose!

Today your hopes make their planting flourish,

and today suffering brings its goodness to fruition.

Can anyone tell after what hardship

the flower-sheaths have heralded their fruits?

Egypt will return to her exalted station,

and the years will grow sweet for her, freed of foulness.

And you have proved that judgment can attain

success beyond the reach of the keen sword.

    كَمْ شِدَّةٍ لانَتْ بِهَا الأَيَّامُ

    Severe was what you faced defending the homeland;

how many hardships made the days relent!

And if you find a man whose courage

is wanting, no perfection can be hoped for there.

What of the man who made life a means,

and whose goal soared above life itself?

The ages pass, but Egypt does not forget you,

and her loyalty is a covenant with you, a sacred pledge.

Far be it from her to forget the memory of her Abd al-Aziz

and his company—unless the pyramids themselves shift.

Egypt, whose stillness they mistook for death:

is stillness amid suffering really death?

Not all who stand through the darkness are awake, nor

are all who close their eyelids asleep.

A people whose cares are heavy may be overtaken

by the drowsiness of sleep, while its conscience keeps vigil.

Young men of Egypt, [heed her]: her young men

are her wisdom, her might, her courage.

Live, and let Egypt live, attaining through you

a glory no other peoples have attained!

And a sacrifice for her is the hero whom, for her sake,

you honored—and honor is his due.

And to you, Abd al-Aziz, a salutation

from one bidding farewell while tears stream down.

Whatever I forget, I shall never forget those occasions:

in their days you were a sun, and we its ordered system.

You devoted yourself wholly to virtues and lofty deeds,

until you met death, swift and deadly.

You refused disgrace in life and in death,

and even among your enemies, the censurer passed you by.

Rest in the shades of immortality, and let there rise for us

among the fixed stars your smiling face.
