حَمْدٌpraise إِلىto السُّدَّةِthe throne الشَّماءِlofty مَرْفُوعُraised
بِمَاwith what يَحِقُّis due لَهَاto it وَالْحَقُّand what is right مَشْرُوعُsanctioned
Praise is raised to the lofty throne,
Praise raised to the lofty throne on high
With what is due to it, and what is rightful is sanctioned.
Is due it, and right is made legitimate
تِلْكَthat الأَرِيكَةُthe throne عَيْنُthe eye of اللهِGod تَكْلَؤُهَاwatches over it
فَالخَيْرُso goodness فِيهَاin it وَعَنْهَاand from it الشَّرُّevil مَقْمُوعُdriven back
That throne is watched over by the eye of God,
That dais is the eye of God overlooking it
So goodness dwells in it, and evil is driven away from it.
Good thrives in it, and evil is suppressed
مُمَكَّنfirmly established أَصْلُهَاits root فِيin عِزِّthe glory of مَنْبِتِهَاits native soil

Its root stands firm in the glory of its native soil,
Its origin established in the glory of its rising place
And in heaven its branches spread with good fortune.
And linked to good fortune in the heavens by its branches
الشَّرْقُthe East مَحْتِدُهَاits ancestral origin وَالغَرْبُand the West مَعْهَدُهَاits abode

The East is its ancestral origin, and the West its abode,
The East is its point of rising, the West its setting place
And glory abounds in its fluttering banner.
Pride in its possession fully contained
سُوَّاسُهَاits rulers أَشْرَفُthe noblest of الأَسْبَاطِdescendants مِنْfrom قِدَمٍancient times

Its rulers are the noblest descendants from ancient times:
Its ruler the noblest of lineages from of old
The sons of al-Husayn, kings and awe-inspiring leaders.
The Banu al-Husayn, the kings, the outstanding leaders
لِلْمَجْدِfor glory مُبْتَدِعٌan originator مِنْهُمْamong them وَمُتَّبعٌand a follower
وَلِلْمَحَامِدِand for praises مَحْمُولٌa predicate وَمَوضُوعُand a subject
Among them are originators of glory and followers of it,
Innovator of glory among them and follower
And in praise, they are both predicate and subject.
Bearer of praise and recipient of tributes
تَدَاوَلُواthey held in succession المُلْكَthe kingdom حَتَّىuntil نابَهُbefell it حَدَثٌa calamity
أَصَمُّimplacable خِيلَit was thought بِهِthrough it للْمُلْكِfor the kingdom تَضْيِيعُruin
They held the kingdom in succession, until a calamity befell it,
They exchanged the kingdom until it was inherited by the youth
An implacable one, thought to spell the kingdom's ruin.
Deaf to the jeopardy that endangered the kingdom
فهَبَّthen he rose يَحْفَظُهُguards it عَبْدُAbd (servant of) الْحَفِيظِal-Hafiz (the Preserver) بِمَاwith what
أَقَرَّهُhe secured it وَالفُؤَادُand the heart الثَّبتُsteadfast مَخْلُوعُwrenched with fear
Then Abd al-Hafiz rose to safeguard it with means
So the Keeper of All preserved it with what
By which he secured it, while the steadfast heart was wrenched with fear.
He resolved, while the heart remained detached
وَرَاضَand he tamed دَوْلَتَهُhis realm حَتَّىuntil اسْتَقرَّhe settled firmly بِهَاin it وَالعَرْشُand the throne
فِيin حِصْنِهِits fortress وَالْحِصْنُand the fortress مَمْنُوعُimpregnable
And he tamed his realm until he was secure in it, and the throne
And settled its affairs until it was established through him, and the throne
Was in its fortress, and the fortress impregnable.
Was protected in its fortress, access denied
صِينَتْwas protected بِهِby him غزَاةٍraiders فِيin الدُّجَىthe darkness انْسَرَبُواthey slipped in
إِلىinto الحِمَىthe sanctuary وَالسَّبيلُand the path البِكْرُuntrodden مَفْرُوعُbreached
Through him it was shielded from raiders who slipped through the darkness
Raiding horsemen crept in the darkness
Into the sanctuary, while the virgin path was breached.
To the protected ground, and the path remained blocked
فَلَمْso he did not يَرِمْbudge زَمَناًfor a time أَنْuntil رَدَّrepelled غَارَتَهُمْtheir raid
وَالحُكْمُand governance مَاwhat شاءَهُwilled it الحَقّjustice مَتْبُوعُfollowed
So he did not budge for a moment until he repelled their raid,
Never did he wish for a time to repel their pillaging
And in governance, what justice wills is followed.
And authority is what the Truth desired, obediently followed
وَالشَّعبُand the people مُستَيْقِظٌawake مِنْfrom غَفْلَةٍheedlessness سَلَفَتْthat has passed
وَالْعِلْمُand learning مُسْتَقْبَلٌwelcomed وَالجَهْلُand ignorance مدْفُوعُdriven away
And the people have awakened from their former heedlessness,
The people awakened from a slumber that was past
And learning is welcomed, and ignorance driven away.
Knowledge faces the future, and ignorance is dispelled
فَالْمَغْرِبُso the Maghreb العَرَبِيُّArab الْيَوْمَtoday مُنْتَعِشٌrevived
جَذْلاَنَjoyful وَالمَغْرِبْand the West الغَرْبِيُّWestern مَفْجوعُgrief-stricken
So the Arab Maghreb is revived today,
The Arab Maghreb today revived
Rejoicing, while the Western world is grief-stricken.
Well and strong, while the West is anguished
نَجَاsurvived مَلاَذٌa refuge خشِينَاwe feared مِنْfrom تضَعْضُعِهِits weakening

A refuge whose collapse we feared has survived,
A refuge survived which we feared lost
And terror has replaced the enemies' hope.
And the enemies' hopes were abandoned, frustrated
فَقَدْfor indeed يُضَامُis oppressed قَوِيٌّa strong one عَزَّwas hard to attain مَطْمَعُهُthe prospect of taking him
وَلاَand not يُضَامُis oppressed ضَعِيفٌa weak one فِيهَin him مَطْمُوعُcoveted
For the strong, hard to prey upon, may be oppressed,
A strong one may be wronged and his hopes limited
While the weak, though coveted as prey, may go unharmed.
But a weak one is not wronged, for he has none
كمْhow many a صَائِدٍhunter صَادَcaught مَاwhat يُرْدِيهِkills him مَأْكَلُهُeating it

How many a hunter has caught what kills him when eaten,
How many hunters hunted prey to feed themselves
And many a wrestler has truly spent the night thrown down.
And fighters who truly fought and were struck down
بِئْسَhow wretched الفرِيسَةَthe prey عَظْمٌa bone لاno اهْتِياضَfracturing لَهُfor it

What wretched prey—a bone that cannot be broken,
Evil is the prey, a bone that entices no covetousness
With which death lures a wolf worn thin by hunger.
That excites the maw of a wolf famished
عَبْدَAbd (servant of) الحَفِيظِal-Hafiz (the Preserver) حَمَاكَmay He protect you اللهُGod عِشْlive أَبَداًforever
وَأَمْرُكَand your command المُرْتَضَىapproved وَالقَوْلَand the word مَسْمُوعُheeded
Abd al-Hafiz, may God protect you; live forever,
O Keeper of All, may God protect you forever
With your command approved and your word heeded.
Your command is approved and your words heard
وَافَتْarrived هَدِيَّتكَyour gift الجُلَّىmagnificent وَآيَتُهَاand its sign
أَنَّthat الْفَخَارَglory بِمَاwith what أَهْدَيْتَyou bestowed مَشْفُوعُjoined
Your magnificent gift has arrived, and its hallmark is
Your radiant gift arrived, and its signs
That glory is joined to what you have bestowed.
Show the pottery was enhanced by your gift
فَمَاso no يُحَاكِيrivals جَمَالٌbeauty فَضْلَthe distinction of نِسْبَتِهَاits provenance
وَلاَnor سَذَاجَتَهَاits simplicity نَقْشٌengraving وَتَرْصِيعُand inlay
So no beauty rivals the distinction of its provenance,
No embellished beauty matches its lineage’s merit
Nor do engraving and inlay rival its simplicity.
Nor does its artlessness match any adornment
إِخَالُهَاI fancy it إِذْas تَعُدٌit counts العُمْرَlife's span مُنْتَقَصاًdwindling
تَزِيدُهُlengthens it وَبِهِand through it للروحِfor the soul تَمْتِيعُdelight
I fancy that, while it counts life's dwindling span,
Its flaws as it counts life’s duration decreasing
It lengthens it, and through it the soul finds delight.
Increase it, and thereby give joy to the soul
يَدٌa hand مِنَof الْجُودِbounty جَاءَتْcame مِنْfrom أَبَرِّيَدٍthe most benevolent hand
تُحْيِيgives life فَإِنْand if عَاقَبَتْit punishes فَالْعَذْلُthen blame مَمْنُوعُforbidden
A hand of bounty that came from the most benevolent hand
A hand of munificence came from a benevolent one
Gives life; if it punishes, blame is forbidden.
To bring life, so if it punishes, retaliation is forbidden
يَدٌa hand ترُدُّturns عِدَاهَاits foes أَعْيُناًsprings نَضَبَتْhave run dry
فَإِنْbut if تَفِضْit overflows بِنَدَاهَاwith its bounty فَهْيَthen it is يَنْبُوعُa fountain
A hand that turns its foes into springs run dry;
A hand that returns hostility with eyes that weep
But if it overflows with its bounty, it is a fountain.
If it releases its bounty, it is an endless spring
يَاO حَامِياًprotector لِلْحِمَىof the sanctuary وَالرَّأْيُand counsel حَائِطُهُits wall

O protector of the sanctuary, with counsel as its wall,
O guardian of protected lands, reason is its wall
And the sword unsheathed and the spear leveled,
Sword unsheathed and spear upright
مَلَكْتَyou won مِنَّاfrom among us نُفُوساًsouls لَسْتَyou are not وَالِيَهَاtheir ruler
بِصَوْنِكَthrough your safeguarding الْمُلْكَthe kingdom أَنْlest يَدْهَاهُoverwhelm it تَصْدِيعُdivision
You have won souls among us whose ruler you are not,
You rule souls that are not your subjects
By guarding the kingdom lest division overwhelm it.
By protecting the kingdom from those who would ruin it
لَوْif يُشْتَرَىcould be bought صَوْنُthe protection of ذَاكَthat الْمُلْكِkingdom مِنْfrom خَطَرٍdanger
لَمَاthen not بَخِلْناwe would stint وَلَوْand even if أَبْنَاؤُنَاour sons بِيعُواthey were sold
If that kingdom's protection from danger could be bought,
If safeguarding that kingdom from danger were purchasable
We would not stint, even if our sons were sold.
We would not begrudge it, even if our sons were sold
مُلْكٌa kingdom هُوَit is العَرَبِيُّArab الْفَذُّpeerless لَيْسَthere is not لَهfor it

A kingdom—the peerless Arab kingdom—that has no
A kingdom, outstanding of Arabs, matchless
Equal, and in it scattered glory is gathered.
Its fragments of glory collected into one
لَعَلُّmay أَتْبَاعَهُits followers يَرْعَوْنَthey safeguard وَحْدَتَهُits unity
فَلاَso not تُنَوِّعُهُمdivide them عَنهَاaway from it التَّناوِيعdivisions
May its followers safeguard its unity,
Perhaps its followers will heed its oneness
So that divisions do not draw them away from it.
And diversions will not distract them from it
هَذِيthese مُنَانَاour hopes وَفِيand in تَحْقِيقِهَاtheir fulfillment لَهُمْfor them

These are our hopes, and their fulfillment brings them
Lies fortune, and in neglecting it, collapse and wailing
Good fortune, and abandoning them brings abasement and anguish.
They are the noble, disdaining blame, we honor them
هُمُthey الكِرَامُthe noble أُبَاةُrejecters of الذَّمِّblame نُكْرِمُهُمْwe honor them

They are noble, scorning blame; we hold them too honorable
Lest any blame or rebuke attach itself to them
For blame and rebuke to befall them.
May they endure, and the glory of their master endure
دَامُواmay they endure وَدَامَand may it endure عَليْهِمْover them مَجْدُthe glory of سَيِّدِهِمْtheir lord

May they endure, and their lord's glory endure over them,
Abdul Hafeez—they were neither wronged nor slighted
Abd al-Hafiz—so may they never be wronged or frightened.
