Peace be upon you, and the heart offers its greeting.

And how lovely is this place toward which we turn!

Sons of my native soil, my thanks to you; and in response

To your request, let blood command whatever it wishes.

But, if you permit me, I have a question:

Why did you seek a poet to sing?

Does verse of fancy delight you, and does it have

Substance by which it may be judged in action?

Or is it praise—do you demand your full share of it from me?

Then, out of love for you: whoever serves goodness is served.

I shall praise this necklace you form, because

Adversities have assailed it, yet it does not break apart.

And I thank you because, for our unity,

You planted a hope that grows and grows greater.

And I pray for you that your example be followed,

So our bygone glory may be revived among us.

Yet I hope my frankness will be forgiven

Should I choose to make the truths known.

For beside what has pleased us in your affairs

Are events filling the East that bring tears and pain.

And by God, from where I stand among you,

I see the East lending an ear, wounded as it is.

I see the East bleeding, seeking for its wound

Healing and solace through counsel offered.

I see ills within it, in whose blame we have

A share; if we acknowledge it, that is wiser.

    فَقَدْ آنَ لِلنُّزَّاقِ أَنْ يَتَحَمَّلُوا

    Let guidance issue from you and encompass your lands;

For the time has come for the reckless to bear responsibility.

    فَصَوْتُ النُّهَى مِنْ حَيْثما جَاءَ يُكْرَمُ

    And let my purpose not be challenged because my ability is weak;

For the voice of reason is honored, wherever it comes from.

Sons of the East, let us grasp our true condition,

So we may survive—or else inevitable doom will be fulfilled.

Ignorance assaults us, with no one to resist,

With an army that has a camp in every quarter.

And we lack sincerity in every pursuit,

And we lack strong, upright character.

And, instead of truth—truth is wearisome—you take comfort

In falsehood, where what we do not harbor is expressed.

And we make a resolution each day, and it passes

Without a trace; why should one who lacks the strength resolve?

Aspirations of hope that crowd the universe,

And ringing cries of pain that fill the air,

And beneath them are only visions that, from their emptiness,

Have run rampant, and wishes that crumble from their frailty.

Is this what, while awake, we count

As our hoped-for reform, or are we dreaming?

Is it that, if our souls clamor and quake

At a calamity, you think us safe, and we crouch down?

Do you imagine that the dark of the moon can be dispelled by

Instrumental music and a clamoring rabble?

Is the condition of greatness that we profess our goodwill,

While resolve is withheld and a dirham held back?

How long, in lassitude and inaction,

Will the world keep pushing us forward while we shrink back?

How long, in hatred and mutual desertion,

And scattered ranks, while the enemies hold sway?

How long, while fortune's turns warn us,

Shall we live as delusion dictates to us?

    فَإِنْ نَتَدَفَّأْ فَالْمَجَامِرُ أَنْجُمُ

    We feel a chill from the nearness of death;

So if we seek warmth, our braziers are stars.

    فَهَلْ عُذْرُهُمْ أَنَّ الشَّوَامِخَ تُزْكَمُ

    And our grandees are nearly in love with head colds;

So is their excuse that lofty peaks catch cold?

Loftiness without meaning, recklessness without bounds,

And amid them our cities crumble.

We fight this West in thought and intention,

And it laughs at us, while good sense slaps us.

From the West comes what clothes us to cover our nakedness,

And from it come drink we favor and food.

And from it comes the equipment of combat with which

We defend ourselves against those from it who storm in.

And every day from it comes a marvel of science,

And every day from it comes an art perfected.

    وَإِلاَّ اسْتَنَرْنَا الْيَأْسَ وَالْجَوُّ مُظْلِمُ

    When its pilot comes to us, he spots the enemy;

Otherwise we take despair for light, while the sky is dark.

And whether we win or fail, it is all the same, for we

Indeed pay in both cases, while the West reaps the gains.

If we suffer in hostility to part of it,

Then the rest collects money from us and lives in comfort.

    عَكَفْنَا عَلَيْهَا لا نَغَصُّ وَنَبْشَمُ

    And we are intent on nothing but our appetites;

We cling to them, never choking, and stuff ourselves sick.

Our villages belong to their merchants, and their inhabitants

Are stewards over every field for the moneylenders.

There are contradictions in us; I have not listed their grave ones,

But I have listed what is gravest.

    وَإِنْ تُقْلِعُوا عَنْهَا فَذَاكَ التَّقَدُّمُ

    If you remain thus, it is backwardness that still persists;

And if you abandon them, that is progress.

Who will excuse me for my heart and its vehement outpouring?

But it loves, and so it does not keep silent.

So, O company made strong through the merit of its union,

And for which charity was an excellent complement,

I have mentioned to you, here nearby, some of our faults,

So that one far away who does not understand may understand it.

Hold fast to this brotherhood, and teach

Its virtues in the East to whoever will learn.

The least of your striving is dearer to the homelands

Than miracles in prose and wonders woven into verse.
