    O you who lamented my pain with me,

    you soothed it in my hearing.

    Your lament is the gentlest balm

    for the sufferer's wound.

    How closely the mellow song clings

    to every enraptured heart!

    Sing the songs of separation,

    and set your rhythm to my lament.

    Daughter of Kinana, what has cast

    you among these dwellings?

    Why did you wander abroad, when you were in

    that most secure refuge?

    Were you carried like a commodity,

    imported without willing consent?

    Then you fled the keeper's cage

    into the wider expanse,

    Wishing soon to return

    to your flock enjoying its ease,

    فِ وَمَلْجَإ الْمُتَفَزِّعِ

    In Egypt, the succor of the distressed,

    and the refuge of the frightened;

    الدِّفْءِ مِصْرَ المَشْبَعِ

    Egypt of clear skies, Egypt

    of warmth, Egypt of plenty;

    كِنُهَا بِرِيحٍ زَعْزَعِ

    Egypt, where no inhabitant

    has been frightened by a shaking wind;

    لِلْمُرْتوِي وَالمُرْتَعِي

    Where there are pastures and dew

    for those that drink and graze;

    تُ عَلَى الطُّيورِ الرُّضَّعِ

    Where the watercourses bend tenderly

    over the fledgling birds;

    Where warmth keeps tending

    its fosterling as it flourishes.

    Or are you one of those wanderers

    through all four seasons,

    Knowing, of all time's changes,

    only the lush green place?

    You leap from one spring pasture

    forever to another,

    With guidance proved sound in

    seeking what is dearest and most beneficial,

    And penetrating thought in

    choosing a course and a fruitful destination,

    And judgment needing no guidance

    from a needle or a beaten path,

    And contentment with a portion

    allotted you by the best dispenser.

    In the flock, wherever it goes, you do not

    fear an ill landing.

    The flock! What wonders it holds

    for a heart that understands!

    At its departure, there gather

    its scattered members in one assembly,

    Without any appointment made beforehand

    for the intended journey.

    And when it rises, it puts to shame

    the departing fleet of ships:

    Thousands upon thousands, without

    hesitation or wavering,

    Without the shaking of instability,

    without the buzzing of disjointed motion,

    Without a collision in the crush,

    shattering and splintering.

    كَالعَارِضِ المُتَقَشِّعِ

    If they draw together, their passing

    is like a dispersing cloud;

    Or if they spread apart, they are armies

    with leaders and followers.

    Each proceeds, and none departs

    from the open route.

    Each follows its own judgment,

    yet their judgment is undivided.

    Each is like a captain steering

    the helm of an obedient ship.

    إلى الْوَادِي ارْجِعِي

    With good fortune, O songstress of the valley,

    return to the valley.

    ئِكِ رَقْرَقَاتِ الأَدْمُعِ

    Indeed, I hear in your singing

    the shimmering of tears;

    And a sorrow in it troubles me,

    like a choking in a farewell-giver's throat.

    That artistry has never

    been perfected in a more wondrous beauty.

    And the neck is adorned with gold,

    with an ornament no hand has made.

    مُوَشَّم وَمُبَقَّعِ

    tattooed and dappled;

    And let the leading wing feathers rise

    with their varied plumage.

    Drawing near to me, descending

    from his lofty throne.

    And how often I sought from his voice

    an echo, and he fulfilled my hope.

    He crossed the unseen and came to me

    in his intermittent appearances.

    فَادْعِيهِ لاَ يَتَمَنَّعِ

    Such faithfulness is his faithfulness;

    so call him—he will not refuse.

    Cry out with the cry of my anguish,

    and repeat the echo of my longing,

    Until he answers; then listen

    with my listening soul.
