O you who keep the people sleepless, you have prolonged your slumber.

All time is but part of this year.

Your day in Lebanon is a day whose

tidings will be told at the end of the ages.

It made my precious tears easy to shed—yes,

by the gravity of the calamity that made them so.

I wept for those praiseworthy qualities that

after you, came to announce separation.

With them, the steadfast pillar grew weak—the one

    that duty soon wore down.

I wept for that noble character—how

unassailable it was! And that form—how beautiful!

I wept for that affection; you had graced me

with a clear token of its friendly warmth.

    دَوَّنَ مِنْهُ المَجْدُ مَا دَوَّنَهْ

    I wept for knowledge whose benefit embraced all;

glory recorded from it all that it recorded.

I wept for inspiration, brought to him above

your peers by the revelation that imparted it.

    وَالصَّوْغُ تُغْلِي فِي الحِلَى مَعْدَنَهْ

    Through thought you draw it down from on high;

through craftsmanship you make its metal precious in ornaments.

    Its meaning—how expressive! Its wording—how

    eloquent! And its style—how solid!

I wept for that sweet courtesy in

him who made it his habit out of nobility.

And for the gentle manner—until, when

    honor called, it turned—how stern!

And for generosity, in which you expend tenderness

that portrayed kindness and gave it artful forms,

with a glance or a word that becomes

    beneficent before the beneficent hand.

It is a great thing for a man to give generously,

his inner self confirming what he has proclaimed.

    Spending wealth, except upon

what the soul desires, is no easy thing.

O you who announce his death among his people,

you have announced the death of his homeland's most faithful servant.

A youth who kept all his covenants,

    through changing circumstances and times.

If he headed the council, he governed it, and no

fault was held against him in any situation.

And he was nothing but a brother, sincere in counsel,

among companions who assented out of trust.

Or, if he left office, clear proof arose of

the ability inherent in his own self.

Beside that merit, how little is what

    pens and tongues recount!

O captive, who would be ransomed from his bonds

by dear ones, if ransom were possible!

Lebanon clasped you to its breast,

and feeling may find expression in places.

Its ribs softened for you, and so

you were pillowed on nothing but a tender heart.

Sleep peacefully; how many a sleepless one in the soil

of his exile has wished his grave were there!

And may morning rain-showers clothe your resting place

in the fairest of all fresh greenery.

Within it lies youth; for one such as he, it is fitting

that the rose and the iris should bend tenderly.
