يَاO مَنْyou who نَأَىwent far away عَنِّيfrom me وَكَانَand were مُرَادِيmy desire

أَتَرَكْتَنِيhave you left me? أَحْياI live جَرِيحَwounded فؤادِيmy heart
أَتَرَكْتَنِي أَحْيا جَرِيحَ فؤادِي
O you who have gone far from me and were my heart's desire,
O you who left me though I wanted you,
Have you left me to live with my heart wounded?
Did you leave me living with a wounded heart?

If you are gone from my sight—alas, my son!—then who
If you are absent, oh my boy, from my eyes, then who
is the adornment of youth, and who the light of the gathering?
Is the adornment of youth and the light of my friends?

Or erected a lofty palace with pillars?

I had been storing all of this for him who
I used to hoard all that for him
from among my offspring would become the leader of my land,
Who will be the chief of my descendants

And will be the first to respond when

The Supreme Caller calls the excellent youths.
سَتَظَلُّyou will remain يَاO وَلَدَاهُmy son مِلْءَfilling حُشَاشَتيmy inmost heart

مَهْمَا أَعشْ وَتَظَلُّ نُورَ سَوَادِي
You will remain, O my son, filling my inmost heart,
You will remain, my boy, filling my mind,
as long as I live, and remain the light of my dark pupil.
As long as I live, and you will remain the light of my gloom,
بِتْabide فِيin النَّعِيمِbliss قَرِيرَcontented عَيْنٍof eye خالِداًeternally
بِتْ فِي النَّعِيمِ قَرِيرَ عَيْنٍ خالِداً
وَعَداكَand may it spare you تَبْريحِيmy anguish وَطُولِand the length of سُهَادِيmy sleeplessness
وَعَداكَ تَبْريحِي وَطُولِ سُهَادِي
Abide eternally in bliss, with your eyes at peace,
Stay in bliss, delight of my eye, immortal,
and may my anguish and long sleeplessness pass you by.
Other than you, my wakefulness is prolonged.
