وَمُذْهَباًand carried away فِيin العَجَبْconceit
O you, extravagant in your revelry,
O you who excessively indulge in vain amusement,
and carried away by conceit,
And are carried away by self-conceit,
هَلاَّwhy not احْتَشَمْتَyou showed restraint وَتَصَدَّقْتَand you gave alms
بِبَعْضِwith some of الكَسَبْthe earnings
Why have you not shown restraint and given in charity
Why do you not show modesty and give charity,
some of your earnings?
With some of what you earn?
مَاذَاwhat يَفِيْدُكَbenefits you الْغِنىwealth إِنْif قِيْلَit is said
What good is wealth to you if you are called
What good is wealth to you if it is said,
a wealthy pauper?
"He is very rich but lacks manners"?
أشعرتنيyou made me feel بجفاءof coldness
وماand not سمعتI heard بعتبof reproach
You made me sense coldness,
You made me feel your coldness,
yet I heard no reproach.
Yet I heard no reproach.
ياO أعدلmost just الناسthe people هلاwhy not

O most just of people, why have you not
O most just of people, why
told me what my fault is?
Did you not tell me my sin?
وليسand there is no ليfor me فيكtoward you ذنبfault

And I have done you no wrong
I have no sin against you
save my loyalty and my love.
Except my loyalty and love.

Indeed, I remain true to the pledge,
I remain true to my vow
whether you grant me closeness or not.
Whether you stay close or go far.

خيرbest نقابveil هوit is تركabandoning النقابthe veil
For most of the women we see,
For most women we see,
the best veil is to leave off the veil.
The best veil is to leave off the veil.

A beautiful woman may be excused if she veils herself;
The beautiful woman may have an excuse to be veiled,
but another—what excuse has she for veiling?
But what excuse has another to be veiled?

How lovely the birth of the one you brought forth!
Blessed is the birth of one whose mother
It was generosity's good fortune that he should be born.
Was of the essence of dew when she gave birth.

A truthful crescent brought him glad tidings
His smile is one of truthfulness,
of heights where he would attain fullness as a star,
Through him a star is made complete.

And his life, throughout its history,
he would enjoy a gentle, pleasant life.
Enjoys a gentle, sweet living.
