O peerless, illustrious man, whom the struggle has claimed!

How grievous the homeland’s loss of its peerless, illustrious man!

You gather pilgrims at the grave, and we are grieved by

the valor and generosity the grave has hidden away.

So you gave your people what no one else had given,

of your very self, of wealth, and of lofty resolve.

And you were first among them in every sacrifice,

and you were last among them in claiming any gain.

Yours is immortality through remembrance and honor,

in this world and the next—and this is the pinnacle of greatness.
