يَاO أَبَانَاour father أَتْحَفْتَنَاyou gifted us وَلَكَand to you الْفَضْلُthe credit
يَا أَبَانَا أَتْحَفْتَنَا وَلَكَ الْفَضْلُ
بِمَجْمْوعَةٍwith a collection مِنَof الأَسْفارِbooks
بِمَجْمْوعَةٍ مِنَ الأَسْفارِ
O our father, you have graced us—and yours is the credit—
O father, you have gifted us and yours is the merit
with a collection of books:
With a collection of scriptures
فِيon الْمَسيحِChrist الْمَلِيكِthe King رَبِّLord of الْبَرَايَاthe creatures
فِي الْمَسيحِ الْمَلِيكِ رَبِّ الْبَرَايَا
مَنْبَعُthe wellspring of الْحُبِّlove مَصْدرُthe source of الأَنْوَارِlights
مَنْبَعُ الْحُبِّ مَصْدرُ الأَنْوَارِ
on Christ the King, Lord of all creatures,
In Christ the King, Lord of the lands
the wellspring of love, the source of light;
The fountain of love, the source of light
فِيon عَرُوسِthe bride of الْمَسيحِChrist أَوْفىmost faithful الْوَفِياتِthe faithful women
فِي عَرُوسِ الْمَسيحِ أَوْفى الْوَفِياتِ
ذِمَاماًin covenant لأَظْهَرِto the most illustrious الأطْهَارِthe pure ones
ذِمَاماً لأَظْهَرِ الأطْهَارِ
on the bride of Christ, the most faithful of faithful women
In the bride of Christ, the most loyal
in her covenant with the most illustrious of the pure;
A leader of the most pure
فِيon الْوَصَايَاthe commandments الْعَشرِthe ten التِيwhich اسْتكمَلَتْfully fulfilled
فِي الْوَصَايَا الْعَشرِ التِي اسْتكمَلَتْ
فِيin الشرْعِsacred law لِلنَّاسِfor humankind حَاجَةthe need of الأدْهَارِthe ages
فِي الشرْعِ لِلنَّاسِ حَاجَة الأدْهَارِ
on the Ten Commandments, which have fully met
In the ten commandments that were perfected
humanity's age-long need within sacred law;
In the law for people, the need of eras
فِيon حَيَاةٍa life لِلروحِfor the spirit تُخَلِّصُهَاfrees it مِنfrom
فِي حَيَاةٍ لِلروحِ تُخَلِّصُهَا مِن
مُوبِقَاتِdestructive evils الأَهْوَاءِpassions وَالأَوْضارِand defilements
مُوبِقَاتِ الأَهْوَاءِ وَالأَوْضارِ
on a life for the spirit that frees it from
In a life for the spirit that saves it from
the ruin wrought by passions and defilements.
The ruin of passions and corruption
يَاO أَبَاناour father جُزِيتَmay you be rewarded خيْراًwith good بِمَاfor what حَاضَرْتَyou lectured
يَا أَبَانا جُزِيتَ خيْراً بِمَا حَاضَرْتَ
فِيهِon it مِنَamong الْبحوثِthe inquiries الكِبَارِthe great
فِيهِ مِنَ الْبحوثِ الكِبَارِ
O our father, may you be rewarded with good for your lectures
O father you were rewarded with good for what you presented
on great subjects of inquiry,
In it of great research
وَبِمَاand for what قدْindeed كَشَفْتَyou revealed لِلنَّاسِto people عَنْهُabout it
وَبِمَا قدْ كَشَفْتَ لِلنَّاسِ عَنْهُ
مِنْof خَبَايَاthe secrets of الأَعْمَاقِthe depths وَالأَغْوَارِand the abysses
مِنْ خَبَايَا الأَعْمَاقِ وَالأَغْوَارِ
and for what you have revealed to people
And what you have uncovered for people
of the secrets of the depths and abysses,
Of the secrets of the depths and caves
وَبِمَاand for what قَدْindeed بَذَلْتَyou offered مِنْof صَادِقِsincere النُّصْحِcounsel
وَبِمَا قَدْ بَذَلْتَ مِنْ صَادِقِ النُّصْحِ
لأَهْلِto people of الْحُلُومِintellects وَالأَبْصَارِand insights
لأَهْلِ الْحُلُومِ وَالأَبْصَارِ
and for the sincere counsel you have offered
And what you have given of sincere advice
to those endowed with reason and insight.
To people of dreams and sights
إِنَّماonly التَّوْبَةُrepentance الْوَسيلَةُthe means للإِصْلاَحِfor reform
إِنَّما التَّوْبَةُ الْوَسيلَةُ للإِصْلاَحِ
فِيin كُلِّevery تَائِبٍpenitent لاِnot يُمَارِيdisputes
فِي كُلِّ تَائِبٍ لاِ يُمَارِي
Repentance alone is the means of reform
Indeed, repentance is the means to reform
in every penitent who does not dispute.
In every repentant, uncompromising
وَالصَّلاَةُand prayer الْمَعَاذُthe refuge مِنْfrom كُلِّevery سُوءِevil
وَالصَّلاَةُ الْمَعَاذُ مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءِ
وَالْمَلاَذُand the shelter الْوَاقِيprotective مِنَfrom الأَخْطَارِdangers
وَالْمَلاَذُ الْوَاقِي مِنَ الأَخْطَارِ
And prayer is the refuge from every evil,
And prayer is the refuge from every evil
and the shelter that guards against dangers.
And the shelter protecting from hazards
يَبْلَغُreaches الْمَرْءُa person بِالصَّلاَةِthrough prayer وَبِالتَّوبَةِand through repentance
يَبْلَغُ الْمَرْءُ بِالصَّلاَةِ وَبِالتَّوبَةِ
أَسْنَىthe loftiest مَرَاتِبَranks of الأَبْرَارِthe righteous
أَسْنَى مَرَاتِبَ الأَبْرَارِ
Through prayer and repentance, a person reaches
One reaches through prayer and repentance
the loftiest ranks of the righteous,
The highest ranks of the righteous
وَإِلىand to اللّهِGod بِالهِدَايَةِthrough guidance يَرْقَىascends
وَإِلى اللّهِ بِالهِدَايَةِ يَرْقَى
مِنْfrom حَضِيضِthe lowest depths of الْجَهْلِignorance البَعِيدِdistant الْقَرَارthe bottom
مِنْ حَضِيضِ الْجَهْلِ البَعِيدِ الْقَرَار
and through guidance ascends to God
And rises to God with guidance
from the abyss of ignorance, whose bottom lies far below.
From the abyss of distant ignorance
حِكَمٌwise sayings صِغْتَهَاyou fashioned them بِدُرٍّwith pearls مِنْof اللَّفْظِspeech
حِكَمٌ صِغْتَهَا بِدُرٍّ مِنْ اللَّفْظِ
مُنِيرٍluminous كَسَاطِعَاتِlike the shining ones الدَّرَارِيthe brilliant stars
مُنِيرٍ كَسَاطِعَاتِ الدَّرَارِي
Wise sayings you have fashioned from pearls of speech
Wisdom you recited with a full moon of diction
luminous as the shining stars.
Illuminating like the shining full moons
فَالْمَبَانِيfor the verbal forms إِلىto السَّماءِheaven مَراَقٍstairways
فَالْمَبَانِي إِلى السَّماءِ مَراَقٍ
وَالمَعَانِيand the meanings فَيَّاضَةٌoverflowing كَالبِحَارِlike the seas
وَالمَعَانِي فَيَّاضَةٌ كَالبِحَارِ
For the verbal forms are stairways to heaven,
So the structures are rising to the sky
and the meanings overflow like the seas.
And the meanings overflowing like seas
وَكَأَنَّand as though الإِلْهَامَinspiration يَهْبِطُdescends مِنْfrom
وَكَأَنَّ الإِلْهَامَ يَهْبِطُ مِنْ
عُلُوٍّon high بِقُدْسِيَّةwith holiness مِنْof الأَفْكَارِthoughts
عُلُوٍّ بِقُدْسِيَّة مِنْ الأَفْكَارِ
And it is as though inspiration descends from
As if inspiration descends
on high, bearing the holiness of thought.
From the Highest with sanctity of thoughts
ذَاكَthat وَحْيُrevelation of الإِيمانfaith أَبْرَزْتَyou displayed فِيهِin it
ذَاكَ وَحْيُ الإِيمان أَبْرَزْتَ فِيهِ
جَوْدَthe bounty of فَادِيthe Redeemer of الْوَرَىhumankind وَمَجْدَand the glory of الْبَارِيthe Creator
جَوْدَ فَادِي الْوَرَى وَمَجْدَ الْبَارِي
That is the revelation of faith; in it you have shown
That is the revelation of faith you have revealed
the bounty of the Redeemer of humankind and the glory of the Creator:
The generosity of the redeemer and the glory of the Creator
الكَرِيمُthe Generous One الْمُثيِبُwho rewards مَنْwhoever يَتَّقيهِfears Him
الكَرِيمُ الْمُثيِبُ مَنْ يَتَّقيهِ
والْحَلِيمُand the Forbearing One الغَفُورُthe Forgiver لِلأَوْزارِof sins
والْحَلِيمُ الغَفُورُ لِلأَوْزارِ
the Generous One, who rewards whoever fears Him,
The Bountiful, the Rewarder of those who are devout
and the Forbearing One, the Forgiver of sins.
And the Forbearing, the Forgiver of burdens
يَاO أَبَانَاour father الَّذِيwho اسْتَجَابَresponded لِدَاعِيto the call of
يَا أَبَانَا الَّذِي اسْتَجَابَ لِدَاعِي
خِدْمَةِservice to اللّهِGod لاَnot لِدَاعِيto the call of الفَخَارِvainglory
خِدْمَةِ اللّهِ لاَ لِدَاعِي الفَخَارِ
O our father, who answered the call
O father who has responded to the caller
to serve God, not the call of vainglory,
Of serving God, not to the caller of pride
وَحَبَاand bestowed upon شَعْبَهُhis people بِأَحْسَنِwith the best of مَاwhat
وَحَبَا شَعْبَهُ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا
يَرْقَبُهُexpects it مِنْfrom رُعَاتِهِits shepherds الأَخْيَارِthe virtuous
يَرْقَبُهُ مِنْ رُعَاتِهِ الأَخْيَارِ
and bestowed upon his people the best of what
And has granted his people the best
they expect from their virtuous shepherds:
That his good shepherds oversee
بَارَكَmay bless اللّهُGod فِيin صَنِيعٍa good deed سَيَبْقَىwill remain
بَارَكَ اللّهُ فِي صَنِيعٍ سَيَبْقَى
أَبَدَforever الدَّهْرِtime خَالِدَimmortal التَّذْكَارِremembrance
أَبَدَ الدَّهْرِ خَالِدَ التَّذْكَارِ
may God bless a work that will remain
May God bless in a deed that will remain
for all time, immortal in remembrance.
