O night when I surprised a flock of graceful women,

At a gathering where they were making feast-day sweets.

They fashion marvels from lumps of dough,

Likenesses of every tangible thing one sees.

And perfect them; so, if lips refrained

From eating them, I would pledge them immortality.

With white fingertips that you might almost imagine

    Dyed with blood, so rose-red is their hue;

And ivory forearms veined with emerald—

Wonders of beauty in the forms of forearms.

They were startled when I came, then warmed to me,

And accepted my presence at the convened assembly.

So I lingered among girdles and tunics,

And smiling mouths, and [apparently wrists], and breasts,

Of every slender-waisted, tall and graceful woman,

    Plump-cheeked, like a grape in a cluster,

    Heart-stealing, beguiling, overpowering,

By speech, or glance, or neck.

But for passion that beguiles the sober, he would not dwell

In women's quarters—a brother of proud men.

My calling is to battle calamities when darkens

The dust of misfortunes amid the black nights.

    أَسْتَنْزِلُ الإلهَامَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدِ

    My calling is to hunt down error with guidance;

I draw down inspiration, not far off.

My calling is to aspire to the heights; yet

This is heaven, and you are the sun of my existence.

You are the truth in life, and false is

All but love for the mortal destined for the grave.

If an hour of it comes to our aid, it has indeed

    Surpassed immortality in its bliss.

As for great deeds and eminence, they are preoccupations

    Born of thought and sleeplessness.

They do not fill the empty heart; their wont is

To wear down strength in misery and good fortune.

Tools of diversion we enlist to help us on

A hard, uphill journey through life,

Like the fruit that a man is given

Among provisions for a journey hard upon him.

And perhaps the aim of every seeker of eminence

Is to please a woman with chains and necklaces.

So life's feast is an hour of meeting,

And the dearest thing we hope for is feast-day sweets.
