O insight, wakeful for the heights,

You taught the shooting stars the beauty of sleeplessness.

Life's spoils belong to its wakeful ones,

    And sleepers reap dreams.

You showed us how wishes are attained,

With daunting obstacles standing before them.

We want an Egypt free and grand,

And if the people resolve, what they wish shall come to be,

So long as they do not squander their rights on falsehood,

And desire does not kill sound judgment within them.

Have we, then, pursued our hopes in earnest,

While our markets leave us in stagnation?

    إِن هِيَ إِلاَّ حِكْمَةٌ وَاقْتِصَادْ

    Wealth does not come in a sudden leap;

It is nothing but wisdom and thrift.

And money remains the intermediary that

    Brings distant aims within reach.

People have long worshipped it, and in

That form of religion, all mortals are equal.

It was scorned, out of inability to attain it,

By sham ascetics who led the masses astray.

The world may prosper by preparing money

For it; otherwise corruption keeps arising from it.

Can one who does not see this world as a means of livelihood

Be sincere in taking up the affairs of the hereafter?

Our weeping for the glory we have lost,

Until our tears are drained—what has it gained?

And is the heritage of glory of any use, if

We continue to rely on boasting of it?

Poverty is a shackle around necks; and if

No release from it is sought, it brings destruction.

And where there is no money, there is no strength,

    Nor protective weapons or equipment,

    Nor any feasible invention, nor

Useful knowledge, or art well made,

Nor men who save the homeland

With sound judgment or by virtue of diligence.
