O eyes that give the eyes nectar to drink,

Keep company with a drunkard who refuses to sober.

    Intoxicate me forever, and consume

My lifeblood in tears and my resolve in flame.

That is the wine of life; whoever has not tasted it

    Once is unworthy of life.

It is life's beauty, in happiness and misery,

And in drinking it morning and evening.

You, O you who gave my heart to drink of it

The heat of passion, anguish, and throbbing:

Wrong me as much as your cruelty wills, and forbid

    Beauty's commander to be compassionate.

Torment me, for I have sinned against

Myself, and have become deserving of punishment.

So for this punishment I returned to my love,

And to face it I broke a binding pledge.

Many a fresh night, its star bewildered,

In which the wanderer cannot find a path,

Enfolded me, burdened by my grief, like a sea

That enfolded a drowned man in its distant depths.

I take the lamps within its bosom for sores,

And see the shooting stars in its sky as burns.

In it Su'ad slept a peaceful sleep,

While I lay awake, lovesick and yearning.

Wherever its darkness concealed me at sunset,

The eye of morning saw me at sunrise.

I had met it when it was dense,

Then bade it farewell when it was thin.

It thinned, then dissolved, then vanished, leaving

Me nothing of itself but a faint phantom.

It remained beside me, as thin as I,

Like the most devoted brother tending a brother.

O sleepers, may sleep delight you,

And may sleeplessness ever remain my lot.

If the wakeful like me are many,

Then Su'ad is the loftiest and most radiant beloved.

What enchants me in her beauty is her radiant face,

Unrivaled, and her supple, graceful figure.

What enchants me is her mind, which creates a thought

With a soul, a body, and veins.

What enchants me is her composing verse, for she does not

String a neatly arranged necklace about her neck.

What enchants me is her gentleness, which revives passion,

And, were it willing, would revive success.

And raises hopes within the soul, like light

That turns seeds into elegant flowers.

Charms with which she bound my heart,

And I see myself as ungrateful if I complain.

    Every captive desires release,

Yet my misery lies in being free.
