O eve of the feast, what

Have you shown us in a moment,

Of all that Egypt has fashioned,

    In kind or variety?

It dazzled in embroidery and metalwork,

    And taste perfected its arrangement.

In the eye are tears that joy allows

    To be shed today.

    For a shadow has receded

That cast its veil over the land.

And a rising star of good fortune has appeared,

    Sweeping that darkness away.

    A calamity grew strong, until

You, O Egypt, willed to avert it.

    God bless your people, fighting

For justice and perfecting its advance!

And the people acts justly only

When it makes its own fair treatment binding.

    A precious victory is hailed

In the opening of this chamber.
