قَدْhas كَبَاstumbled مُهْرُكَyour colt الأَغَرُّwhite-blazed المُحَجَّلْwhite-socked
O brave horseman, dismount!
O brave knight, dismount
Your white-blazed, white-socked colt has stumbled.
Your noble steed has stumbled
شَدَّgreatly مَاhow خَبَّhe trotted مُوجِفاًhastening كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday
فِيin طِلاَبٍpursuit مِنَof الفَخَارِglory مُعَجَّلْhurried
How hard he trotted, hastening every day
How often it falters each day
in a hurried quest for glory!
Seeking glory too swiftly
دَمِيَتْbled بِالرِّكَابِfrom the stirrups شَاكِلَتَاهُhis two flanks
فَهَوَىso he fell رَازِحاًweighing heavily بِهِupon him مَاwhat تَحَمَّلhe had borne
His two flanks bled from the stirrups.
Its flanks bloodied by the stirrups
So he fell beneath the weight of what he had borne.
It collapsed under your weight
هُزِلَتْwasted away سُوقُهُhis legs إِلَىuntil أَنْthat تَثَنَّتْthey buckled
وَدنَاand drew near عُنْقُهُhis neck إِلَىuntil أَنْthat تَسَفَّلْit sank low
His legs wasted away until they buckled,
Its legs buckled till they bent
and his neck drooped until it sank low.
Its neck sank down till it dropped
وَخَبَاand faded مِنْfrom جَبِينهِhis brow نَجْمُa star سَعْدٍgood fortune
طَالَمَاso often كَانَit was ضَاحِكاًsmiling يَتَهلَّلْbeaming
And the star of good fortune faded from his brow,
And the star of fortune faded
which had so often smiled and beamed.
From its brow, where it once sparkled bright
هَكَذَاthus رُحْتَyou went on تُرْهِقُexhausting العُمْرَlife حَثّاًby goading
فَتَلاَشَىso it faded وَمَجْدُهُand its glory بِكَthrough you أَمْثَلْnobler
Thus you kept wearing life out with your goading,
Thus you wore out its life with haste
so it faded, while its glory was nobler through you.
And its glory faded with you, a cautionary tale
نَادِبِيO mourners of أَدْهَمAdham وَنَاعِيand heralds of the passing of عُلاَهُhis glory
كَانَit was مِنْof خِيرَةِthe choice الْعُلَىglory أَنْthat تَرَحلit should depart
O mourners of Adham and heralds of his glory's passing,
My friends lament and cry for its loss
it was glory's own choice to depart.
It was the best of the noble breeds
لَمْdid not يَبِتْspend the night فِيin الثَّرَىthe earth فَتَىthe youth الْخَيْلِthe horses لَكِنْbut
آثَرَhe preferred الأفْقَthe horizon صَهْوَةًa horse's back فَتَحَوَّلْso he moved on
The young steed did not rest in the earth; instead,
No other warhorse lies in the dust
he chose the horizon for a saddle and moved on.
It chose the horizon, and departed
