O beloved, besides whom I have no beloved,

And whom I have adored since my childhood.

Had you not been the companion of my youth,

The freshness of the days would not have pleased me.

I do not hide from you a painful secret:

It is a lament buried in my bones.

Everything you love I love, except

Seeing a rival share in my love.

And I wish you were mine, mine alone,

That I might cease reproaching you.

What has changed, O beloved of my heart,

When my pledge is still the pledge you have known?

This banner that has possessed your heart

Is my worry in my waking and my sleep.

For at every moment she is your all-consuming concern,

In the early morning and beneath the darkness.

Beware, O beloved of the heart, a worry

That is nothing but an illusion among illusions.

O my beloved, you have lit up my mind and filled

My heart with pride through these words.

Among all things guarded, none is worthier than the banner

Of Egypt to receive protection and honor.

I would give my life for you, my beloved, and you for her,

And all humankind would give their lives for you both.

Rather, come, let us both sing, and be

The best support for your love-distraught lover.

Banner of prosperity in the serenity of nights,

Banner of victory in the turmoil of battle,

Tower above every banner, and exalt

Our people forever above all peoples.
