هيْهَاتimpossible أَنْthat أَسْلوَI find solace أَوْor أَنْسَىI forget
مَنْthe one who كَانwas طِيبَsweetness of العيْسِlife (likely intended; literally, pale camels) وَالأُنْسَاand companionship
Never could I find solace or forget
Alas! I can neither forget nor give up
Him who was life's sweetness and companionship.
The one whose company was pleasant and delightful,
ذَاكَthat one الَّذِيwhom أَسْكنْتُهُI lodged him مُهْجَتِيmy heart's core
وَكَانَand he was بَدْرَthe full moon of العَيْنِthe eye وَالشمْسَاand the sun
That one whom I lodged in my heart's core,
He who dwelt in the depths of my soul
Who was the eye's full moon and the sun.
And was the full moon and sun to my eyes.
أَهْوَىI love الَّذِيwhom يَهْوَىhe loves وَأَقْلَىand I loathe الَّذِيwhom
يَقْلَىhe loathes وَأُرْسِىand I anchor حَيْثُمَاwherever أَرْسَىhe anchored
I love whom he loves, and loathe whom
I love him who loves me, I meet whom I meet,
He loathes, and anchor wherever he anchored.
I alight wherever he alights.
عَامَانِtwo years مَرَّاboth passed بِيby me وَتَاللّهِand by God مَاnot
عِشْتهُمَاI lived them both مَعْنىًin spirit ولاَnor حِساin sense
Two years passed me by, and by God I did not
Two years passed while I was with him, by God
Live them in spirit or in sense.
I lived not their meaning nor felt their pleasure,
نفْسَانِtwo souls لَكِنَّهمَاbut the two of them كَانَتَاthey both were
فِيin كُلِّall مَاthat which يُرْضِيpleases العُلَىnobility نفْساone soul
Two souls, yet they were
Only our souls, which were in everything
In all that pleases nobility, one soul.
That satisfies the Sublime Soul.
لَمْdid not تَدعَاthe two forsake زَيْناًbeauty وَلَمْand did not تُزْمِعَاthe two resolve upon
شَيْئاًanything وَلَمْand did not تَنْتَجِعَاthe two seek out رِجْسَاdefilement
They forsook no beauty, nor did they resolve
They left no allure unadorned, gathered
On anything, nor did they seek defilement.
No filth, retrieved no wickedness.
اللّهَGod, invoked in praise فِيconcerning عَهدِكَyour pledge يَاO خَيْرَbest of مَنْthose who
أَضْحَىwas by day عَلَىupon العَهْدِthe pledge كَمَاjust as أَمْسَىwas at evening
God bless your fidelity, O best of those
By God, in your covenant, O best of those
Who kept their pledge by day as at evening.
Who have been true to their word at eventide!
اللّهَGod, invoked in praise فِيconcerning بَأْسِكِyour valor ياO مَنْyou who بِمَاthrough what
أَمْضَاهُhe carried it out عَدْلاًjustly شَرَّفَennobled الْبَأْسَاvalor
God bless your valor, O you who, through what
By God, in your might, O you who by your
You carried out justly, ennobled valor.
Decree has ennobled might!
اللّهَGod, invoked in praise فِيconcerning حِلْمِكَyour forbearance يَاO مَنْyou who بِهِwith it
أَلاَنَhe softened قَلْبَthe heart of الأَصْلَدِthe hardest الأَقْسَىthe harshest
God bless your forbearance, O you who with it
By God, in your clemency, O you who by it
Softened the heart of the hardest, harshest man.
Has softened the rugged, flinty heart!
اللّهَGod, invoked in praise فِيconcerning جَوْدِكَyour generosity يَاO مَنْyou who سَخَاgave freely
فَلَمْand so did not يَذَرْhe leaves فِيin جَوِّهِhis surroundings بُؤْسَاmisery
God bless your generosity, O you who gave freely
By God, in your generosity, O you who freely gave
And left no misery in your surroundings.
And left no need in his generosity!
لَوْلاَhad it not been for عُفَاةٌseekers of bounty جَهَرُواthey proclaimed openly بِالَّذِيabout that which
كَتَمْتَyou concealed لَمْwould not نَسْمَعْwe hear لَهُof it جَرَسَاa sound
Had not seekers of your bounty proclaimed what
Had it not been for some loudmouths who disclosed
You concealed, we would have heard no sound of it.
What you concealed, we'd not have heard a peep.
جَرَحْتَyou wounded قلْبِيmy heart آخِذاًtaking شَطْرَهُhalf of it
فَالجُرْحُso the wound فِيin بَاقِيهِwhat remains of it لاَnot يُؤْسَىis healed
You wounded my heart, taking half of it;
You have wounded my heart, taking its moiety,
So the wound in what remains cannot be healed.
So the wound in the rest cannot be healed.
عَلَيْكَfor you يُبْكَىtears are shed يَاO أَمِيرَprince of النَّدَىbounty
علَيْكَfor you ياO زَيْنَadornment of الحِمَىthe homeland يُؤْسَىgrief is felt
You are wept for, O prince of bounty;
For you tears are shed, O Prince of Dew,
You are mourned, O adornment of the homeland.
For you, O Pride of the Sanctuary, tears flow.
كنْتَyou were لَهُfor it طالِعَa rising star of سَعْدٍgood fortune فَإِذْand when
غِبْتَyou vanished غَدَاbecame طَالِعُهُits rising star نَحْسَاill-omened
You were its rising star of good fortune; and when
You were to him a rising star of fortune, but when
You vanished, its rising star became ill-omened.
You departed his rising star turned to ill luck.
لِيَهْنِيءِmay he gladden الأَمْلاَكَthe angels فِيin خُلْدِهِمْtheir eternal abode
مَنْthe one who بِنَوَاهُby his departure أَوْحَشَhe left desolate الإِنْسَاhumankind
May the angels in their eternal abode be gladdened by
To gladden the angels in their eternity
Him whose departure left humankind desolate.
With one whose loss has saddened mankind.
