فِدَاءٌa ransom لِمَنْfor the one whom أَهْوَاهُI love him روحِيmy soul فَهَلْso, do...? تَرَىyou think
يقَاسِمُنِيhe shares with me ذَاكَthat الْهَوَىthe passion وَيغَادِيand visits at dawn
My soul be a ransom for the one I love—do you think
My soul is a ransom for the one I love—do you think
he shares that love with me and comes to me at dawn?
he shares that passion with me and visits at dawn?
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat أَيَّامِيmy days أَتَاحَتْgranted لِيَto me الْمُنَىthe wishes
لَظَلَّhe would have remained مقِيماًdwelling فِيin صَمِيمِthe very core of فُؤَادِيmy heart
If only my days had granted me my heart’s desire,
And if my days had granted me my wishes,
he would have remained forever in the very core of my heart.
he would have remained dwelling in my heart’s very core.
خَلِيلَيَّO my two friends وَمِلْءُand the fullness of الْعَيْنِthe eye مِنِّيof mine حُسْنُهُhis beauty
وفِيand in كُلُّevery آنٍmoment مِنْهُfrom him خَوْفُfear of بُعَادِseparation
My two friends, his beauty is all that fills my sight,
O my two friends, his beauty fills my eyes,
yet at every moment I fear separation from him.
and every moment brings fear of separation from him.
تُنَاهِبُهvie to steal him مِنِّيfrom me لِحَاظُglances صَوَاحِبِيmy female companions
وَتِلْكَand those إِلىtoward قَلْبِيmy heart سِهَامُarrows of أَعَادِenemies
The glances of my women companions vie to snatch him from me,
My female companions’ glances vie to steal him from me,
and those are enemies’ arrows aimed at my heart.
and those are enemies’ arrows aimed at my heart.
أَغَارُI am jealous عَلَيْهِover him مِنْof نَضِيرِthe fresh bloom of شَبَابِهِhis youth
وَأَبْغَيهِand I want him كَهْلاًmiddle-aged لَوْif only يَتِمُّis fulfilled مُرَادِيmy wish
I grow jealous over the radiant bloom of his youth,
I am jealous over him, even of the fresh bloom of his youth,
and would have him middle-aged, if only my wish came true.
and I would have him middle-aged, if only my wish came true.
