My likeness has truly startled me.

Was it you who created me anew?

And I wished you had spared

Some of my flaws such truthfulness.

    By what wondrous craft

Did you lend the image speech?

So nearly did the copy mirror the original

    That I see no difference.

    My likeness, indeed I gaze

At you, and I feel tenderness.

My end is near—oh, my joy!

    But you may yet remain.

I fear for you, lest you live on—

    And who lives without suffering?

If you were made to bear the least of what

You have been made to bear, how harsh your lot would be!

    Ah, you whom we honor,

Yet whose due we do not render!

    This art has a magic

    That accompanies creativity and mastery.

Through it you have reached, O Edwar-

d, a height hard to scale.
