عَاشَLong live فَارُوقُFarouk مِصْرَof Egypt فَخْرُpride الشَّبابِof youth
عَاشَ فَارُوقُ مِصْرَ فَخْرُ الشَّبابِ
وَمَلاَذُand refuge الأخْلاَقِof morals وَالآدَابِand of letters
وَمَلاَذُ الأخْلاَقِ وَالآدَابِ
Long live Farouk of Egypt, pride of youth,
and refuge of morals and letters.
كُلُّevery عِلْمٍscience وَكُلُّand every فَنٍّart لَهُhas مِنْهُfrom him
كُلُّ عِلْمٍ وَكُلُّ فَنٍّ لَهُ مِنْهُ
التِفَاتٌattention عَالٍlofty وَفَضْلٌand favor رَابِabundant
التِفَاتٌ عَالٍ وَفَضْلٌ رَابِ
Every science and every art receives from him
lofty attention and abundant favor.
طَلْعَةٌa countenance مِثْلُlike طَلْعَةِthe countenance of الشَّمسِthe sun تُحْيِيbrings life
طَلْعَةٌ مِثْلُ طَلْعَةِ الشَّمسِ تُحْيِي
ثَمَرَاتِfruits القُلُوبِof hearts وَالأَلْبَابِand minds
ثَمَرَاتِ القُلُوبِ وَالأَلْبَابِ
A countenance like the sun’s, bringing life
to the fruits of hearts and minds.
أَيُّwhat سَعْدٍjoy لِشَعْبِهِfor his people أنْto يَرَاهُsee him
أَيُّ سَعْدٍ لِشَعْبِهِ أنْ يَرَاهُ
طَالِعاًappearing بَيْنَهُamong them وَمَاand not مِنْany حِجَابِbarrier
طَالِعاً بَيْنَهُ وَمَا مِنْ حِجَابِ
What joy for his people to see him
appear among them with no barrier!
أَيُّwhat رَاجِpetitioner وَالجُودُand generosity حَقٌّis a duty عَلَيْهِupon him
أَيُّ رَاجِ وَالجُودُ حَقٌّ عَلَيْهِ
لَمْhas not يُصِبْreceived مِنْهُfrom him مَاwhat is وَرَاءَbeyond النِّصابِthe due share
لَمْ يُصِبْ مِنْهُ مَا وَرَاءَ النِّصابِ
What petitioner, when generosity is his duty,
has not received from him more than his due?
أَيُّwhat شَأْنٍundertaking رَعَاهُhe tended لَمْhas not يَبْلُغِreached
أَيُّ شَأْنٍ رَعَاهُ لَمْ يَبْلُغِ
الشَّأوَthe goal الْمُعَلَّىhighest وَلَمْand was not يَكُنْit بِعُجَابِa wonder
الشَّأوَ الْمُعَلَّى وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بِعُجَابِ
What undertaking he has tended has not reached
the highest goal? And that is no wonder.
يَعْمَلُworks الفِكْرُthought سَالِكاًtaking كُلَّevery نَهْجٍpath
يَعْمَلُ الفِكْرُ سَالِكاً كُلَّ نَهْجٍ
لِلْمَرَاقِيtoward progress وَفَاتِحاًand opening كُلَّevery بَابِdoor
لِلْمَرَاقِي وَفَاتِحاً كُلَّ بَابِ
Thought works, taking every path
toward progress and opening every door.
هَذِهِthis فِرْقَةٌtroupe تَدَارَكَهَاwas reached by it العَطْفُkindness
هَذِهِ فِرْقَةٌ تَدَارَكَهَا العَطْفُ
فَعَادَتْand it became مَتِينَةَstrong الأَسْبَابِin its bonds
فَعَادَتْ مَتِينَةَ الأَسْبَابِ
This troupe was reached by his kindness
and became strong in its bonds again.
يَبْرُزُbring forth المُولَعُونَthe devotees بِالفَنِّof art فِيهَاwithin it
يَبْرُزُ المُولَعُونَ بِالفَنِّ فِيهَا
طُرُفاًrare works مِنْfrom مَوَاهِبِgifts الوَهَّابِof the Bestower
طُرُفاً مِنْ مَوَاهِبِ الوَهَّابِ
The devotees of art in it bring forth
rare works from the gifts of the Bestower.
فِيهِمُamong them الرَّاسِخُthe established one المُدَرَّبُthe trained one يَتْلُوfollows
فِيهِمُ الرَّاسِخُ المُدَرَّبُ يَتْلُو
تِلْوَةُafter him نَابِتٌa budding one نَضِيرُfresh الإِهَابِof aspect
تِلْوَةُ نَابِتٌ نَضِيرُ الإِهَابِ
Among them, the seasoned, trained performer is followed
by a budding one, fresh of aspect.
مِنْamong هُوَاةِlovers التَّمثيلِof acting يَرْجِعُtakes back
مِنْ هُوَاةِ التَّمثيلِ يَرْجِعُ
بالتَّارِيخِthrough history َأدْرَاجَهُits steps مَدَىacross الأَحْقَابِthe ages
بالتَّارِيخِ َأدْرَاجَهُ مَدَى الأَحْقَابِ
A lover of acting takes
history back through the ages,
وَمُحِبِّيand lovers of الأَمْثَالِproverbs يَضْرِبُهَاset them forth
وَمُحِبِّي الأَمْثَالِ يَضْرِبُهَا
التَّالُونَthose who follow وَالسَّابِقُونَand those before لِلأَعْقَابِfor posterity
التَّالُونَ وَالسَّابِقُونَ لِلأَعْقَابِ
and lovers of proverbs set them forth
for posterity, those who follow and those who came before.
يَبْتَغُونَthey seek الكَمَالَperfection فِيin ظِلِّthe protection of فَارُوقَFarouk
يَبْتَغُونَ الكَمَالَ فِي ظِلِّ فَارُوقَ
وَقَدْرُand the measure of النَّجاحِsuccess قَدْرُis the measure of الطِّلاَبِambition
وَقَدْرُ النَّجاحِ قَدْرُ الطِّلاَبِ
They seek perfection under Farouk’s protection,
and success is measured by the ambition pursued.
وَطَرِيقُand the road to الكَمَالِperfection وَعْرٌis rugged ولكbut
وَطَرِيقُ الكَمَالِ وَعْرٌ ولك
نَّbut, continued مَداهُits course مُذَلِّلٌovercomes لِلصَّعابِdifficulties
نَّ مَداهُ مُذَلِّلٌ لِلصَّعابِ
The road to perfection is rugged, but
its course overcomes difficulties.
أَيُّهَاO الزَّائِرُvisitor الْعَظِيمُgreat أَثَابَmay He reward اللهُGod
أَيُّهَا الزَّائِرُ الْعَظِيمُ أَثَابَ اللهُ
مِنكَyour الجَميلَkindness خَيْرَthe finest الثَّوَابِreward
مِنكَ الجَميلَ خَيْرَ الثَّوَابِ
O great visitor, may God reward
your kindness with the finest reward.
كُلُّevery شُكْرٍthanks يَصُوغُهُit composes الرَّوْضُthe garden لاَcannot
كُلُّ شُكْرٍ يَصُوغُهُ الرَّوْضُ لاَ
يُوفِيrepay وإِنeven if جَلَّit is great مِنَّةthe bounty للسِّحابِof the clouds
يُوفِي وإِن جَلَّ مِنَّة للسِّحابِ
All the thanks the garden can compose cannot
repay the clouds’ bounty, however grand.
وَلَعَلَّand perhaps السُّكوتَsilence أَبلَغُis more eloquent فِيin الحَمْدِpraise
وَلَعَلَّ السُّكوتَ أَبلَغُ فِي الحَمْدِ
وَأَوْفَىand fuller وَفِيهِand in it فَصْلُthe decisive الخِطَابِword
وَأَوْفَى وَفِيهِ فَصْلُ الخِطَابِ
Perhaps silence speaks more eloquently in praise
and more fully; in it lies the decisive word.
عَاشَLong live فَارُوقُFarouk مِصْرَof Egypt فَخرُpride الشَّبابِof youth
عَاشَ فَارُوقُ مِصْرَ فَخرُ الشَّبابِ
ومِلاذُand refuge الأَخلاَقِof morals والآدَابِand letters
ومِلاذُ الأَخلاَقِ والآدَابِ
Long live Farouk of Egypt, pride of youth,
and refuge of morals and letters.
يَاO مَلِيكَاًking حَمَىHe protected بِهِthrough him اللهُGod مِصْراًEgypt
يَا مَلِيكَاً حَمَى بِهِ اللهُ مِصْراً
مِنْfrom نُكُولِreversals الدُّنْيَاof the world وَسَوْطِand the scourge of العَذَابِsuffering
مِنْ نُكُولِ الدُّنْيَا وَسَوْطِ العَذَابِ
O king through whom God has protected Egypt
from the world’s reversals and the scourge of suffering:
يَرِدُcomes to drink العَالَمُthe world الحَمِيمَscorching water وَأَمَّاwhereas
يَرِدُ العَالَمُ الحَمِيمَ وَأَمَّا
وِرْدُهَاher draught فَهْوَis مِنْfrom نِطَافٍdrops عِذَابِsweet and fresh
وِرْدُهَا فَهْوَ مِنْ نِطَافٍ عِذَابِ
the world comes to scorching waters, whereas
her draught is of sweet, fresh drops.
لِلْفِنُونِfor the arts ازْدِهَارُهَاtheir flourishing وَالرَّزَايَاand calamities
لِلْفِنُونِ ازْدِهَارُهَا وَالرَّزَايَا
غَافِلاَتٌunaware وَالأَمْنُand security فيin اسْتِتْبَابِfirm establishment
غَافِلاَتٌ وَالأَمْنُ في اسْتِتْبَابِ
The arts flourish for her, while calamities
pass her by and security takes hold.
ذَاكَthat مِنْcomes from عَبْقَرِيَّةِthe genius of العَاهِلِthe monarch الهَادِيthe guiding
ذَاكَ مِنْ عَبْقَرِيَّةِ العَاهِلِ الهَادِي
وَلِلْرَّأْيِand counsel has غَيْرُa different فِعْلِeffect from الحِرَابِweapons
وَلِلْرَّأْيِ غَيْرُ فِعْلِ الحِرَابِ
That comes from the guiding monarch’s genius,
and counsel achieves what weapons cannot.
