وَأَجْدَادُكُمْand your ancestors أَجْدَادِيَmy ancestors الْعُظَمَاءُthe great ones
Listen, O sons of Ghassan, descendants of Ya'rub,
Oh people of Ghassan, descendants of Ya'rub
And your ancestors are my own great ancestors.
Your forefathers and mine were great men
أَخُوكُمْyour brother وَقَدْand already أَضْحَىhad become غَرِيباًa stranger بِزَيِّهِin his attire
أعَادَrestored لَهُto him السَّمتَthe bearing الأَصيلَnative رِدَاءُa cloak
Your brother had become a stranger in his attire;
Your brother though dressed differently
A cloak restored his native bearing.
Has regained the fine, original attire

Stop and behold me, strutting in the cloak,
Stop and look at me wrapped in a cloak
Majestic, with pride in my gait.
Imposing, proud in my walk
ترَوْاyou will see كَيْفَhow تَكْسُوclothes رَبَّةُthe lady of الْفَضْلِbounty عَاطِلاًone unadorned
وَكَيْفَand how يَكُونُis الْمَجْدُglory وَهْوَwhile it is كِسَاءُa garment
You will see how the lady of bounty clothes one unadorned,
See how excellence clothes an empty man
And how glory itself can be a garment.
And how glory can be a garment

It bears metallic embroidery whose gleam the eyes fear,
Made of cane, so fine it dazzles the eyes
And fine wool, from which dust-motes were woven.
And delicate wool like a floating mist
جَزَىmay reward اللهُGod كُلَّall الخَيْرِgoodness مَنْthe one who أَنْعَمَتْshe bestowed بِهَاwith it
وَهَلْand is there? عِنْدَwith مَسْؤُولٍone petitioned سِوَاهُother than Him جَزَاءُrecompense
May God reward with every blessing her who bestowed it,
May God reward with all good, he who bestowed it
And does anyone petitioned but Him have recompense to give?
For who else can reward, if not Him?
