It has passed; we refuse to condemn it,

just as we refuse to praise it.

It did ill at its beginning,

and its ending was very bad.

So, O year, we counted, out of

grief, your hours one by one.

Your intercessor is a day of happiness,

radiant as a sun, exalted in glory,

that gave us, enough to fill our world

and all its time, good fortune,

    when tomorrow they chronicle you

as an epoch marking the start of our life—

one that raised our nation from its fall

and changed our humiliation into glory.

So there is no slavery and no oppression,

    neither master nor slave.

We became equals; we became brothers,

and our enmity turned to affection.

And we became sons of Osman,

    gray-haired elders and beardless youths.

We have a homeland that, with our lives

and our most precious wealth, is ransomed.

    Despite our divisions, we profess

it as our one and only faith.

When it calls to us, we march

to it, all of us as an army.

And we come from our temples,

seeing a banner where we meet.

How fine the year that bestowed on us

    the aid it bestowed!

    It is consultation—may God exalt

its giver, who bestowed a flash of light.

For no palm is more healing,

    and no palm is more generous;

    and no dawn is clearer,

and no rising star more guiding.

    We forgave that year's sin—

the harm it did and the ruin it brought.

And between the evil and the good,

we forgave a thousand wrongs for one good deed.
