Is there in Egypt's bond with Sudan

anything the two lands would not wish to last?

O delegation of honor that has arrived, and in

every heart holds the dearest place,

Egypt welcomed you, without excess, as

a mother welcomes virtuous sons [probable reading].

Proud of her visitors, endowed with piety,

and learning, and courage, and benevolence.

    She neglected no duty enjoined

for you by honor, when it lay within her power.

And among her happy strokes of fortune

were the leader's return and yours at the same time.

The leader returned, fulfilling her hopes,

so throughout her lands there is a double celebration.

He anchored the constitution in her, and her independence

reached completion, its structure firmly secured.

And her shackles broke apart, and shrinking

away from her were the shadows of oppression and aggression.

The fruits of what Saad's two hands planted, and what

the souls of the gray-haired and young watered—

martyrs whose names never rose to the heights,

while their blood lay in the low ground and the corners.

May the morning rain-clouds water their thirsty ribs [probable reading],

with an outpouring of mercies and divine favor.

How dear is victory's day, as the two brothers, in

the shade of victory's sword, meet!

And the great men of the two lands are gathered, from among

    leaders, or scholars, or notables.

The elite among the homeland's men display

their courtesies to the elite among the guests,

in a fresh garden, with its ornaments arranged

in an order whose beauty delights both eyes.

The decorations sing to one another in their honor

what no poet sings with his tongue.

Is there in its blossoms and in its banners

anything but wondrous beauty and meanings for the mind?

Amid the dancing of shade and radiance within it

and the flirtation of lights and colors,

what the weaving of verse failed to perfect was perfected,

or surpassed, by the weaving of roses and sweet basil.

What the lips' speech failed to convey was conveyed

by the eyes' glance, with the most eloquent expression.

So long live Egypt and her half, her Sudan!

And long live the unity of Egypt and Sudan!

And long live Farouk, the king for whom lives would be given,

and may the two lands be mighty beneath his banner!
