هل للمعزي في القول تعزية

وهل يقول عن ذاهب عوض

Is there consolation in words for the comforter?

And can one speak of a replacement for one who is gone?

جبريل في الطب كان نابغة

لمثله التكرمات تفترض

Jibril was a genius in medicine;

For one like him, honors are due.

مات وآثاره له خلف

حي على الدهر ليس ينقرض

He died, but his works are his successor,

Living through the ages, never passing away.

بعلمه كان في الطليعة من

قوم وفي الأولين إذ نهضوا

Through his knowledge, he was in the vanguard of

A people, and among the first when they rose.

لا عجب إن قضى لساعته

وما به علة ولا مرض

No wonder he died in an instant,

Though he had neither ailment nor disease.

تجنبته الأمراض وهو بها

أفتك منها فغاله عرض

Diseases shunned him, and against them he was

Deadlier than they; then an affliction struck him down.

نوازل الروح لا دواء لها

تفسد تدبيرنا فينتقض

The calamities of the soul have no cure;

They thwart our planning, and it comes undone.

والأمر لله والقضاء له

فيما يرى ما عليه معترض

And command belongs to God, and the decree is His;

In what He sees fit, none objects to Him.
