Is there anything new for the elegist to say
While death gives its lesson, then repeats it?
When death repeats the same lessons every day?
لاnot ينقضيends تعديدthe lament for ناءone departed نابهit overtook him
لا ينقضي تعديد ناء نابه
حتىuntil يكونthere is لغيرهfor another تعديدa lament
حتى يكون لغيره تعديد
The lament for one departed, whom it struck, is not yet over
The numbering of the weeping never ends
Before a lament begins for someone else.
Until another takes his turn to grieve.
يعييfalters بيانيmy eloquence دونshort of ماwhat أناI واجدam feeling
يعيي بياني دون ما أنا واجد
أينwhere is البيانeloquence وجهدهand its effort المحدودlimited
أين البيان وجهده المحدود
My eloquence falters, short of what I feel.
My eloquence fails before what I now face;
What can eloquence achieve, with its limited power?
Where is eloquence when effort is so fraught?

عطف الحمام بيوسف وبصنوه

قتلا فقيدا للنبوغ فقيد
Death turned upon Yusuf and his brother;
The dove wept for Joseph and his prison;
Both slain—one loss to genius beside another.
Each a tragedy, each a genius lost.
لمdid not ينجescape منهfrom it معصمone sheltered فيin معقلa stronghold
لم ينج منه معصم في معقل
تحميهprotects him رايةthe banner of أمةa nation وجنودand soldiers
تحميه راية أمة وجنود
No one sheltered in a stronghold escaped it,
No one escapes, not even in a fortress
Protected by a nation's banner and soldiers.
Guarded by a nation and its armies.
كلاno indeed ولمand did not ينجescape النطاسيthe skilled physician الذيwho
كلا ولم ينج النطاسي الذي
هوhe فيamong نوادرthe rare talents of مصرهhis city معدودcounted
هو في نوادر مصره معدود
No; nor did the skilled physician escape,
No, nor the pipe player, counted among
Who was counted among his city's rare talents.
Egypt’s rarest talents, did escape.
حمwas ordained القضاءfate's decree فلاso there is no مردaverting لهfor it وهلand can?
حم القضاء فلا مرد له وهل
طبmedicine إذاwhen حمwas ordained القضاءfate's decree يفيدavail
طب إذا حم القضاء يفيد
The decree was sealed: none can avert it—and can
Destiny is merciless, none can repel it,
Medicine help when the decree is sealed?
What can medicine do if destiny strikes?
خطبانtwo calamities راعappalled الشرقthe East وقعهماtheir impact ففيso in
خطبان راع الشرق وقعهما ففي
أرجائهits reaches لصداهماfor their echo ترديدrepetition
أرجائه لصداهما ترديد
Two calamities—their impact appalled the East; throughout
Two champions have fallen, shepherds of East and West,
Its reaches, their echo resounds.
Their echo rebounds in every distant corner.

يا مكرمين اليوم ذكرى يوسف
جمعgathered الذوائبthe foremost men يومهhis day المشهودmemorable
جمع الذوائب يومه المشهود
O you who honor Yusuf's memory today,
Today, friends, we commemorate Youssef,
His memorable day has gathered the foremost men.
A day that gathered glories without count.
لمhas not ينسforgotten ناديكمyour assembly مآثرهhis noble deeds وهلand can?
لم ينس ناديكم مآثره وهل
ينسىbe forgotten وليa patron مثلهlike him وعميدand a leader
ينسى ولي مثله وعميد
Your assembly has not forgotten his noble deeds; can
Your club has not forgotten his achievements,
A patron and leader such as he be forgotten?
Can a guardian forget one so noble and wise?
أجللhow grand بهذاis this الحفلgathering مصرEgypt تقيمهholds it
أجلل بهذا الحفل مصر تقيمه
ثكلىbereaved وللأمصارand the cities have فيهin it وفودdelegations
ثكلى وللأمصار فيه وفود
How grand this gathering, which Egypt holds,
Egypt honors him in this gathering,
Bereaved, with delegations from the cities present.
While I mourn him, delegations come from afar.
ماذاwhat يقولsay مؤبنوهhis eulogists وماand not تفيsuffice
ماذا يقول مؤبنوه وما تفي
خطبspeeches ببثto express شجونهمtheir sorrows وقصيدand poetry
خطب ببث شجونهم وقصيد
What can his eulogists say? Neither
What can his eulogists say? What can their speeches
Speeches nor poetry can fully voice their sorrows.
Convey of their sorrows and their elegies?
يبكونthey mourn أيwhat a فتىman بلواthey tested أخلاقهhis character
يبكون أي فتى بلوا أخلاقه
حتىuntil المماتdeath وكلهنand all of them حميدpraiseworthy
حتى الممات وكلهن حميد
They mourn—what a man!—whose character they tested
They weep for a young man of noble character,
Until death, and all his traits were praiseworthy:
Virtuous until death, blessed in every way.
لطفgentleness وحسنand good تصرفconduct ولباقةand tact
لطف وحسن تصرف ولباقة
وطلاقةand cheerfulness تحييrevives النفوسsouls وجودand generosity
وطلاقة تحيي النفوس وجود
Gentleness, good conduct, and tact,
Gentle and tactful, bringing life to souls,
And cheerfulness that revives souls, and generosity.
Eloquent, refreshing hearts by his presence.
رجلa man تخيرchose فيin الحياةlife سبيلهhis path
رجل تخير في الحياة سبيله
فارادso he desired ماwhat العلياءlofty glory منهof him تريدdesires
فاراد ما العلياء منه تريد
A man who chose his path in life,
A man who chose his path in life wisely,
So he sought what lofty glory asked of him.
Seeking what the virtuous seek to attain.
بالعلمin learning لاnot يسموrises إليهto him منافسa rival
بالعلم لا يسمو إليه منافس
والحلمand forbearance لاnot يرقىascends إليهto him نديدa peer
والحلم لا يرقى إليه نديد
In learning, no rival rises to his level;
In knowledge no rival could aspire to reach him,
And in forbearance, no peer ascends to his height.
In wisdom none could approach his summit.
وبماand in what يجيدmasters بيانهhis eloquence لمdid not يشؤهoutstrip him
وبما يجيد بيانه لم يشؤه
فيin حلبةthe arena of الادبliterature الرفيعlofty مجيدa master
في حلبة الادب الرفيع مجيد
And in what his eloquence mastered, he was not surpassed
His eloquence flowed effortlessly, unstopped,
By any master in the arena of lofty literature.
A master amidst the highest literary art.
أماas for المروءةnobility of character والوفاءand fidelity فإنهthen indeed he
أما المروءة والوفاء فإنه
بهماin both لمنقطعtruly without النظيرan equal فريدunique
بهما لمنقطع النظير فريد
As for nobility and fidelity, he is
As for nobility and loyalty, he was
In both truly without equal, unique.
Beyond compare, uniquely distinguished.
أدنىbrought nearer منto الملكthe king العظيمgreat مكانهhis rank
أدنى من الملك العظيم مكانه
صدقtruthfulness ورأيand judgment فيin الأمورaffairs سديدsound
صدق ورأي في الأمور سديد
His rank was brought near the great king
Though ranking below the sovereign,
By truthfulness and sound judgment in affairs.
He was sincere and sound of judgment.
وأصابand he received منfrom نعمىthe bounty of فؤادFuad قبلهbefore him
وأصاب من نعمى فؤاد قبله
مالwealth لمdid not يصبattain إلاexcept الكفاةthe capable men الصيدthe noble ones
مال لم يصب إلا الكفاة الصيد
And from Fuad's bounty, before him, he had gained
He achieved blessings of heart like no other,
Wealth attained by none but the able, noble men.
Fortune favors only the deserving.
لمdid not يثنهdeter him عنfrom واجبduty برحtorment بهafflicting him
لم يثنه عن واجب برح به
وزمانهand his times قاسharsh عليهtoward him شديدsevere
وزمانه قاس عليه شديد
No torment that afflicted him turned him from duty,
No duty could deter him from fulfilling it,
Though his times were harsh and severe toward him.
Though his times were harsh and demanding.
أرضىpleased البلادءthe country وعاهليهand his two sovereigns وربهand his Lord
أرضى البلادء وعاهليه وربه
فلهso his is الثوابthe reward ولاسمهand for his name التخليدimmortal remembrance
فله الثواب ولاسمه التخليد
He pleased the country, his two sovereigns, and his Lord;
He pleased his country, its rulers, and his Lord,
So his is the reward, and his name shall be immortal.
His reward is eternal fame and remembrance.
ياO ثالثthe third الاخوينof the two brothers كمhow many متخلفa survivor
يا ثالث الاخوين كم متخلف
فيهwithin him كفاءthe equal of المجدglory وهوand he is وحيدalone
فيه كفاء المجد وهو وحيد
O third brother beside those two, many a survivor
O third of three brothers, with you now lost
Has glory's equal within him, though he stands alone.
Are the heights of glory, and you were peerless.
أنتyou العزاءthe solace وجلand great is ماwhat ترجىyou are looked to لهfor it
أنت العزاء وجل ما ترجى له
فيin نفعbenefiting قومكyour people والبقاءand continued life مديدlong
في نفع قومك والبقاء مديد
You are the solace; great is what is hoped of you
You were our consolation; our hopes relied
In serving your people; may your life be long.
On your service of your people, enduring and vast.
لكyou have فيin الصحافةjournalism مبدعاas a creator ومجدداand as an innovator
لك في الصحافة مبدعا ومجددا
أثرan impact جليلgreat فيin مداهits scope بعيدfar-reaching
أثر جليل في مداه بعيد
In journalism, as creator and innovator, you have
In journalism you were creative and renewing,
A great impact, far-reaching in its scope.
Your influence profound, its reach far and wide.
فاسلمso remain safe وتابعand continue فيin رقيthe advancement of شؤونهاits affairs
فاسلم وتابع في رقي شؤونها
همماaspirations تعزstrengthen مقامهاits standing وتزيدand increase
همما تعز مقامها وتزيد
So live in safety, and pursue, to advance its affairs,
Be resigned, and continue to raise its mission,
Aspirations that strengthen its standing and raise it further.
With resolve to strengthen and exalt its position.
