Is there any marvel in peace or war

To equal spreading knowledge among the people?

For among its miracles is all that

We admire in the East and the West.

O champions of knowledge, the gratitude of minds

Is yours, like the garden's gratitude to the clouds.

    Egypt greets you and praises

    Every generous, noble, gallant man.

She praises and cherishes with approving eyes

The labor of steadfast, mighty men.

    Egypt, where guidance and generosity

Race neck and neck toward glory,

Gives minds, through the sweet waters of her Nile,

    The share the soil receives from her sweet Nile;

And remembers kindness for those who bestow it,

In the present time and in time to come.

Reach perfection, O house of learning that has become

The central pivot for every excellence.

A college, in every part of which lies

A treasure of knowledge for the intellect.

It trains young men in whom one takes pride

    In law, letters, and medicine.

    A school whose students attain

The utmost of what they aimed to obtain.

He whose lot is hardship, and he whose lot

Is ease—both are its guests, warmly welcomed.

It serves each of the two with service

Pleasing to the servant and the Lord.

It infuses the mind with the vigor of aspirations,

And stirs courage in the heart.

    كَفَاؤُهُ لَيسَ مِنَ اللِّعْبِ

    Through it the people gain benefit—genuine benefit;

Repaying it is no trifling matter.

And the people's sons have always been our

    Climbers on the difficult ascent,

The hardest-toiling upholders of the homeland's glory,

In life's ease and in distress.

However much the wealthy of their people help them,

The greater merit remains on their side.

But we are in a bewildered age

Where the grounds for pride have been misjudged.

So thanks for the slightest generosity were demanded

By what made poverty a sin.

Better to meet every crack that appears

On the people's side by mending it.

For whoever guards a foundation grown weak

Guards a homeland against an evil outcome.

And if the people's ignorance long endures,

The mark of unrest appears upon them.

How delightful this night of fellowship, resplendent,

    Illuminated by the radiant dignitaries!

Blessed be whoever invites others to it, and whoever

Strives to do good out of love.
