طُفْتُI wandered وَالصُّبْحُand the dawn طَالِباًseeking فِيin الجَنَانِthe gardens
I wandered at dawn, seeking in the gardens
I wandered at dawn seeking in the gardens
solace from the torments of sorrow.
Solace from the pangs of passion’s agony
فَنفَىso it banished حُسْنُهَاtheir beauty الأَسَىgrief عَنْfrom ضَمِيرِيmy inner self
وَجَلاَand cleared نَاظِرِيmy sight وَسَرَّand gladdened جنَانِيmy heart
So their beauty banished grief from my inner self,
Her beauty banished sorrow from my soul
and cleared my sight and gladdened my heart.
Brightened my sight and delighted my heart

A lily, dazzling white and pure,
A lily gleaming pure white radiance
both eyes drink their fill of its whiteness;
Refreshing the eyes with its brilliance
وَجُفُونٌand eyelids مِنْof نَرْجِسٍnarcissus دَاخَلَتْهَاhad entered them

and narcissus eyelids, into which had crept
And eyelids with narcissi lined
the yellow pallor of sickness, in a sufferer's eye sockets;
Touched by the yellow hue of languor
وَوُرُودٌand roses كَأَنَّهَاas though they were مَلِكَاتٌqueens

and roses, as though they were queens
And roses like stately queens
appearing in gauzy robes of purple;
Emerging in strands of purple
وَأَفَانِينand varieties مِنْof شَقِيقِanemones وَمِنْand of فُلِّArabian jasmine

and varieties of anemones and Arabian jasmine,
Violets, anemones, tulips as well
and double blossoms and sweet basil.
Sweet basil and fragrant herbs
كُلُّeach ضَرْبٍkind شَبِيهُresembling سِرْبٍa flock جَمِيعٍgathered together

Each kind was like a flock gathered together,
Each species like unto a flock
set apart from its fellows in one place.
Scattered alone in place
طَالَlasted long فِيهَاamong them تَأَمُّلِيmy contemplation وَكَأَنَّيand as though I

Long was my contemplation of them, as though
Long I gazed as though I were
I were among them in a garden of beautiful, wide-eyed women.
In the garden of Iram's bliss
فَتَوَخيْتُso I sought مُشْبِهاًa counterpart لأَلِيسٍto Alice
بَيْنَهَاamong them فِيin صِفَاتِهَاher traits وَالمَعَانِيand inward qualities
So I sought a counterpart to Alice
I fancied myself a companion
among them, in her traits and inward qualities.
Matching their traits and meanings
فَإِذَاthen behold الْبَاهِرُthe dazzling النَّقِيُّthe pure مِنَamong الزِّthe lily (first fragment)

But lo the bright pure lily
the lilies: a mirror of her bewitching beauty,
Is the mirror of her seductive beauty

her likeness in her grandeur and her radiance,
Her form is in the lily's stem
and an echo of her name, or a second name.
An echo of her name or a second one

In it are her splendor and her stature—
It holds her brilliance, graceful height
slender—and her color, the image of feeling;
Alluring hue, the very image of rapture
وَالْعَبِيرُand the fragrance الَّذِيthat يُحَدِّثُtells عَمَّاabout what

and the fragrance that tells of what
The fragrance that speaks of what
lies in the most secret heart, with the keenest eloquence;
Lies in the most hidden soul with clearest words
وَالشُّعَاعٌُand the radiance الَّذِيthat بِهِby it يُرِيshows البَغْيَwrongdoing زُهْراًstars

and the radiance by which it shows wrongdoing as stars,
The rays with which it shows the beholder
and shows them as flowers at the same moment.
A flower or a bouquet at once
فَهْيَso she فِيin الرَّوْضِthe garden وَالنُّجُومِand the stars قَوَاصٍdistant

So she is in the garden, while the stars are distant;
She is amidst the garden and the clustering stars
and she is at the zenith, while the stars are near.
Amidst the horizon with the stars my desire
تَتَراءىappear reflected السَّمَاءُheaven وَالأَرْضُand earth كُلٌّeach

Heaven and earth are mirrored, each
Heaven and earth both appear
in the other, and the two gardens meet.
Each in the other and the two gardens meet
إِنَّمَاnothing but النَّرْجِسُthe narcissus ابْتِسَامَةُa smile فَجْرٍdawn

The narcissus is but a smile of dawn,
The narcissus is but the smile of dawn
its weave made delicate by the All-Merciful's hand.
Woven by God's gentle hand

It stood in a robe of white, and that robe was
It stood in robes of whiteness thus becoming
a soul's garment, not the garment of a mortal body.
A spirit's gown not a perishable body’s
وَاسْتَزَادَand sought more الْحِلَىadornments سِوَاهَاothers besides it فَجَاءَتْso they came
Others sought more adornments, and these came
And other jewels beside it seemed to vie
where the signs of imperfection increased.
Where more their signs of inferiority
هَكَذَاthus سِرُّthe secret كُلِّevery حَيٍّliving being نَرَاهُwe see it
خَلَلَthrough الشَّكْلِthe form بَادِياًmanifest لِلْعَيَانِto sight
Thus we see the secret of every living being
Such is the secret of every living thing we see
through its form, plainly revealed to sight.
Evident amidst its form to the beholding eye
فَنَرَىso we see أَنْفُسَthe souls الْحِسَانِbeautiful women حِسَاناًbeautiful
حَيْثُمَاwherever هُنَّthey عَنْof حُلِيٍّadornments غَوَانِيfree of need
So we see the souls of beautiful women as beautiful,
So we find loving souls to be loving
wherever they have no need of adornment;
Wherever they are free of deceitful guile
وَنَرَىand we see أَنْفُسَthe souls الأَزَاهِرِthe flowers غُرّاًradiant
إِذْwhen نَرَاهَاwe see them عفيفةchaste الأَلْوَانِthe colors
and we see the souls of flowers as radiant,
Just as we find the flowers’ essence to be chaste
when we see them chaste in their colors.
When we see them pure of hue
