I love, yet fair women are not my desire,

those who steal minds and thoughts,

who snare hearts in a net

    they weave from the wiles of dark-eyed beauty;

who make humankind wretched for the slightest

    favor they bestow upon the gaze;

who rule with unshakable sway, and never

cease to be fate's strongest instruments.

For apart from them I have an enchantress,

envied among the stars and among the flowers.

Ever smiling of face, she is not altered

in any circumstance by any turn of fortune.

True to her pledge, at her appointed times

she appears, and at them vanishes from my sight.

Her youth endures, and her splendor

shines most gloriously through nights of vigil.

When we meet, we are not troubled

by a watcher's suspicion that calls for caution.

And if she vanishes, I sleep content,

with a meeting awaited in the morning.

She is like a suspended pearl—

yet how could the choicest pearl compare with her?

A raindrop on the brink of a horizon,

    silvered on both sides and sloping downward;

a tear of joy an angel set in place

in an orbit, neither flowing nor stirring.

He placed his smile within her, and she blazed

from one passing age into another.

A dot on a letter in her Creator's name,

clearer than the dots of all the other stars.

She holds the Originator's wondrous art, and so follows

in the chapter of the cosmos, the verse of the moon.

A beauty, in whose lovely form

lies every shape that longing could desire.

She knows no sin, and so is naked,

revealing her charms without a covering.

And sin is only where there are corrupt

consciences; it is the handiwork of humankind.

Eve was like this, then she began

to cover herself, because of her sin, with a waistcloth.

God be praised for that morning: I saw her cool herself

in a downpour like liquid silver.

    Light streamed over her, tinged

by the lingering trace of night's ambergris.

So whenever it flowed from her sides,

through her it was cleansed of murky impurities.

And as its light increased, she grew subtler

within it, and finer than a fragrant liquid,

until she vanished. No chastity, no

beauty compares with Venus bathing before dawn.
