لِيI have سِكَرَتِيرَانِtwo secretaries عُزَّتْwas strengthened دَوْلَتِيmy realm بِهِمَاthrough them both
لَمْnot يَأَلَوَانِيhave both been remiss toward me إِسعَاداًbringing happiness وَإِجْمَالاَand kindness
I have two secretaries; through them my realm has been strengthened.
I have two secretaries who are the pillars of my state
They have spared no effort to make me happy and treat me kindly.
They have never failed to bring me joy and beauty
هُمَاthe two of them جنَاحَانِtwo wings لِيfor me وَالقَلْبُand the heart بَيْنَهُمَاbetween them both
يَغُزُوassails الأمانِيdreams جَوَّالاًever roaming وَصوَّالاَand charging fiercely
They are my two wings, and the heart lies between them;
They are two wings for me, with my heart between them
It assails dreams, ever roaming and charging.
Flying ambitions far and wide
إِنْif أَفْتَخِرْI take pride بِهِماin them both فَالشَّرْقُthen the East مُفْتَخِرٌtaking pride
بِصَارِمَيْهِin its two keen swords إِذَاwhen ماemphatic particle اعْتَزَّit took pride واخْتَالاَand strutted
If I take pride in them, then the East takes pride
If I take pride in them, the East takes pride
In its two keen swords whenever it boasts and struts.
In its two swords, whenever it is honored and prevails
أَطالprolonged كلُّهُمَاeach of them ظِلماًunjustly عُزُوبَتَهِhis bachelorhood
فَرُمْتُso I wished لَوif only بَدَّلاthey would both substitute عدْلاَin fairness بِهَاin its place حالاَa state of life
Each of them unjustly prolonged his bachelorhood,
Both have long endured the injustice of alienation
So I wished they would, in fairness, exchange it for another state of life.
I wished they would change that for justice
فاخْلَفَthen he broke الأكْبَرُthe elder الوَعْدَthe promise الَّذِيthat وَعدَاhe had promised
وصَدَّقَand fulfilled الأصْغَرُthe younger القَوْلَthe word الَّذِيthat قَالاَhe had spoken
Then the elder broke the promise he had made,
The elder broke his promise that he made
And the younger made good on the word he had spoken.
The younger kept his word that he spoke
عَلَّperhaps المُضِيِّعَthe one who squandered آمَالِيmy hopes وَغَايَتَهاand their aim
صفَاؤُهُhis sincerity مُنْجِحٌbringing to fruition لِيfor me فِيهِin him آمالاَhopes
Perhaps the one who dashed my hopes and their aim—
The disappointer dashed my hopes and their ends
His sincerity will fulfill the hopes I place in him.
His clarity succeeded for me where there were hopes

I joyfully congratulated As'ad on his wedding celebrations;
I congratulated Saad happily
When shall I congratulate Mikal on his wedding celebrations?
When will I be congratulated by Michael?
