I have been brought in life to my dearest goal,

And waking hours have grown as sweet to me as dreams.

O my bliss, endure! No wish of mine goes beyond you—

Only that you consent to endure.

At every rising of a star and at its setting,

A memory renews for me the pledges of my love.

As long as I live, I shall not forget my youth, nor a dwelling

Where I grew up, and where my stay was sweet.

Nor the beloved girls among my tribe's daughters,

Modest in gesture, eloquent in speech.

Each a maiden, content with the precious ornaments

Within her soul, needing none that worldly wealth can buy.

A Bedouin woman, enchanting in her beauty,

Whose chastity was joined to boldness.

She sets out for hard-won sustenance, never flagging,

Though exhausted, and returns in the darkness.

Despite the grit in her life, within her flourish

Virtues like the smiling rose of a dungheap.

When I would watch their visits to the water, and sometimes

    Accompany them, paying no heed to reproach;

Or when I would watch their play—could one see

Anything but chastity in the gazelles' diversions?

And when the returning men had gathered,

In assembly among encampments and tents,

They spoke of what they had done or what they had learned,

Of every matter of great moment.

And seldom did they jest about the severity

Of the distresses and pains they faced.

    أَحْيَوْهُ بِالأَوْسَاقِ وَالأَنْعَامِ

    These wastelands had been a lifeless domain;

They brought it to life with loads of grain and livestock.

My people, noble and valiant; and my father

Among them, the arbiter of counsel and judgment.

Foremost in pursuing the aims of settled prosperity,

His far-reaching estate had encompassed the farms.

He raised a stately building amid gardens,

Lush and watered by the swelling al-Aqiq.

How lovely their fields, and the vantage points

Among them, overlooking the growing cotton ripe for picking.

Its bright stars gleam upon its tender tips

At times, and drip with streaming gold.

I could not have forgotten life among noble women

Of my family in the camp, and among noble men,

Had God not granted me more of His bounty

Beyond all the blessings I had hoped for.

There I made for the well; the girls of my age

Were scattered round it without order.

They drew water and returned with jars so full

They were almost dripping over their heads.

Suddenly a warrior appeared before me on foot,

His thirst plain, stirring my own thirst.

I looked at him for the first time, and saw

Nothing in him but a moon at its full.

I gave him drink, and let my eye drink from him,

Until we had gazed our fill, each still thirsty.

I thought seeing him, with all its joy, nothing but

A vision that came to me in sweet slumber.

Did he turn to ask who my father was, and linger over

Whatever questions about my family he wished?

He sought easy conversation, caring nothing for

My maternal uncles' lineages, nor my paternal uncles'.

Then he turned away, and in my heart that night was

A searing ardor and blaze I had never tasted.

    أَكْرِمْ بِهِ مِنْ عَائِدٍ مُعْتَامِ

    He left, and next day returned, choosing our sanctuary;

How noble a returning visitor, discerning in his choice!

He made his way by love's guidance, stealing quietly,

And God knows he sought nothing forbidden.

He kept watching me and filling his ears

With the melodies of mine that stirred longing,

Until I turned, with no misgivings about his presence,

And there before me stood yesterday's noble youth.

I found in Hasan every grace,

And counted my own years in his.

    وَكَتَمْتُ سِرِّي فَاسْتَشَفَّ هُيامِي

    And from the moment we met, he confessed his passion to me;

I concealed my secret, yet he divined my passion.

It was an hour whose darkness hope dispelled

From my eye, through the longed-for rising star.

How sweet, had I not been startled in that hour

By Umar, with a glance loosed like arrows!

Umar! God forbid that I should accept him

As a husband—I would not accept him among my servants.

Would I trade the best youth for the worst, when in

My nature and my character lies a refusal of disgrace?

Praise to Him who, through my beloved's love, fulfilled

My desire, and raised my standing among women.

    لا كَدَّرَتْهُ طَوَارِئُ الأيَّامِ

    A new life was made serene for us through marriage;

May the vicissitudes of days never cloud it.
