I arrived, and Egypt in the darkness

    Was desolate, as you know.

And those returning after dark were not

    Numerous at the office.

    So I discerned only

    Faces of the illustrious elite.

And they had stayed up late, just as they had come early,

    Without weakness or flagging.

And first among them was Sami,

    And second among them, Fikri.

Both are charged with loosing and binding,

    Both with forbidding and commanding.

Both see to provisions that meet

    The needs throughout the country.

The people sleep so long as watch is kept

Over them by the eye of benevolence.

    So, after a hasty greeting

    And a preamble of apology,

I sat while you were occupied

    With a task—what a task!

    You moved a pen ceaselessly,

As it ran over its paper.

    And the cigarette trembled between

Your two fingertips and your mouth,

So, from the burning of tobacco, it made

    An air laden with fragrance.

    The fixed lights seemed

Within it to be stars in motion.

So I followed the smoke as it billowed

Between the flow and the ebb.

In its turbulence and its stillness

    Lay many forms of magic.

For a moment I kept gazing

At it with a steady gaze.

So it revealed to me the seat of creation

    And planning in the mind.

    And portrayed, in signs,

The flutter of stirrings in the breast.

As though I witnessed both your states

Between one line and the next:

    وَحَيْثُ الْقَوْلُ فِي عُسْرِ

    Where words came with ease,

    And where words came with difficulty;

    لُذْتَ بِنجْدَةِ الذِّكْرِ

    And where, when inspiration failed,

    You sought refuge in memory's aid;

And where you grappled with the two opinions,

From a slave and from a free man.

So I marvel at the smoke, and at what

It unveiled to me of the mystery.

As though your mind, through it, behind

    A transparent veil,

Showed me the truth of what they said,

    From knowledge and from experience.
