Has the thirst of your parched heart been quenched

by those springs flowing from Lebanon?

Or has separation from native lands destroyed it?

And the bitterest loss is separation from native lands.

It never ceased to beat with yearning for them,

until it came to rest there, its beating stilled.

As for me, the calamities of separation almost

drain the tears from my eyelids.

No year passes for me but I bear

grief for a friend among my friends.

And the present grief for a brother is renewed

by my grief for those of my brothers who have passed.

Is there solace for me after your departure, while sorrow

has conquered consolation and come to fill my heart?

The news of your death has grieved those who remain, though

it pleased those of your peers who went before.

The patient one grew distraught—while you lay still—at what struck

that resolve in the foremost of young men,

and the youth of that body in its prime,

and the youth of that soul in its prime.

How did you fall silent, once the songbird of the homeland,

with your echo there filling every place?

The night of the sleepless will lengthen, and the homeland's night,

in longing for your resonant recitation.

Death is treacherous, and no intercession is won

for the nightingale by its warbling among the boughs.

Who, O brother of mastery, will after you fashion

the gems of verse with such mastery?

In all that you set your reed pen to,

    you attained the utmost excellence.

By natural gift, in verse or prose, you cast

the loftiest meanings in the most delicate forms.

You love progress, so we never tire of your showing

the paths of guidance and the ways of civilization.

So when you criticize, you are the keenest of birds

in seeing matters distant and near.

How many a wise saying you echoed and repeated,

with the ringing of third and second strings!

And many a rhymed prose tale you divided and joined,

as choice pearls are strung with silver beads between,

with eloquence that leaves no need

for explanation in a reader's mind,

and a fluency that slakes thirst, as though it were

drops of dew in a heat-parched heart,

and wit that enchants those of understanding,

like the play of lights and colors.

The tales you so finely penned suffice

for nations to read through ages to come.

Pages without number leave their mark

as long as epochs cycle through time.

Do not be far away, for within our hearts

you have a place that will not yield to forgetting.

Your memory is fresh in the garden of fidelity,

and your grave's soil is drenched with tender longing.
