Had love given my heart its due,

I would have had no heart apart from other mortals.

But the affection I gave wholeheartedly to the beloved

Is love, though I call it affection.

I have an excuse if I remain still, although my soul

Is in pain, and calamities recur.

My shadow almost reveals sorrow as it moves by night,

And there is gladness in my face when Suad appears.
