Fifty unforgettable years of changing times

Have passed, and you were their voice—Lisan al-Hal.

In them, governments came and went, and you faced what

You faced of reversals and terrors,

    Steadfast, your resolve gathering strength

From sudden setbacks, to press ahead.

The clouds close in, and the stars stumble,

Yet it is the lighthouse, its light glittering.

How much lies in the pages you brought out

Of days of toil and nights of sleeplessness!

How often you defended truth, how often set right

An opinion, how often scattered the ranks of error!

So every truth enlightened the prudent,

And every vision stirred the resolute.

Whatever I forget, I shall not forget the support

You bestowed on me in days gone by,

    When youth roused my resolve

And I ran my course in the race of eloquence,

And saw life, its hopes smiling upon me

From a thousand mouths in the burning ardor of my words.

You nurtured me as a child—what better preparation

For progress than the nurturing of children?

And to the homeland you gave writers in whom

It takes pride—leave aside those like me.

O age of Khalil, may their purest flow water you—

The steady rains of midmorning and the clouds of late afternoon!

You were the vanguard in the hoped-for age

For the transformation of ideas and circumstances.

And in you the father of journalism keeps at his toil,

Weaving without weariness upon a loom.

Khalil, through his diligence and steadfastness, was

The noblest example to those who followed him.

He blunted calamities' sharp edge by bearing

Misfortunes, though they were very heavy.

He gathers hopes like roses from their thorns,

    And eases pains with hopes.

And remains, as long as loyalty to his people wills,

War to the enemy and peace to every ally.

In the form of a gentle lamb, yet at times

You found him charging with a lion's fury.

Indeed, I remember his noble face, whose

Splendor was adorned with majesty by gray hair.

It united comeliness, generosity, and contentment,

All appearing together in a blend of beauty.

And I see the faces of his trusted companions around him,

As though the veil of the unseen reveals them to me.

Each a willing helper, the blackness of his ink

Is light, and the aim of his gaze is lofty.

They filled his newspaper with what reason dictates

    Of splendid opinions and sayings.

And Salim, the deft man of letters, pours from

A sea of invention dazzling pearls.

He brings forth each novel, virgin marvel, with

A freshness that never crossed a mind.

And his thought flares like a fire-stick's spark in what

    Flows from his ever-flowing pen.

An age has passed; its first honored men now lie—

They who revived a land—among moldering bones.

Yet he who denied the eyes their Khalil

Gladdened hearts with the noblest of sons.

O Ramiz the good, whose manners

Are proverbial among those who know him,

And his qualities, among those reaching the highest summits

Through noble character, are the finest qualities.

Through you, glory preserves a treasured trust,

Which in your hands is the trust of generations.

Rejoice, then, in al-Lisan's jubilee, and gain through it

Whatever love and reverence you desire.

And live long in safety for its sake; may it remain

An emblem of merit and perfection in the homeland.
