Say to those who painted it

    and falsified it with paint:

    That majesty was

    truth, and became pretense.

O you doomed in the morning,

    then perishing by evening,

    and going to meet death

    among the quickest to perish—

    what offense against you

    has that immortality committed?

to be given beauty with paint?

Alas for art, at the hands of those who

    assail it with pretension,

and see beauty as nothing but

    foolish cleanliness,

    and newness that splinters

    into glitter and ostentation.

and what, for the sake of

    sound judgment, defies caprice,

and spares no effort to match the loftiest

    meaning intended for expression,

and whatever has come in keeping with

    the wishes of sound taste.

when they turned it to brightness,

and dustiness that is abhorrent to

    art when turned to cleanness,

and rust that is disdained by

The old, when it is fine,

is not the same as the new.

    yet strong, although

it is thought to be dust.

and borrows, for the most enduring

    glory, a robe from it.

they set heat and cold to work,

    and earth and air,

until they clothed the iron of the

    such as noble deeds inscribe

    upon men in praise,

    While the monument, so
