And qualities he publicizes by beating the drum—

The booming drum—and playing the tanbur.

من دعاوي فنية هي زور

Merit abhors what is repeated and proclaimed

Of artistic claims that are false.

ليس حكم الجمهور فيها بحكم

ولحين قد يخدع الجمهور

ولحين قد يخدع الجمهور

The public's judgment of them is no judgment;

And for a time the public may be deceived.

إن للفن مرجعا ولأهل الذكر

إن للفن مرجعا ولأهل الذكر

فيه الإنصاف والتقدير

Indeed, art has an authority, and to the learned

Belong fair judgment and appraisal in it.
