بِرَغْمِto the dismay of المَعالِيlofty honors أَنَّكَthat you اليَوْمَtoday نَائِمُasleep
لِغَيْرِfor other than غَدٍa morrow تَرْجُوهُhope for it مِنْكَfrom you العَظَائِمُgreat deeds
To greatness's dismay, you lie asleep today,
With no morrow that great deeds may hope for from you.
تَوَلَّيْتَyou departed مُحْمُوداًpraised بِمَاwith what يَفْرضُenjoins النَّدَىgenerosity
لِمَجْدِكَfor your glory مِنْof حَقٍّa due وَتَقْضِيand decree العَزَائِمُfirm resolves
You departed with the praise that generosity enjoins
As your glory's due, and firm resolves decree.
أَلاah! ياO! لَقَلْبِيfor my heart! مِنْfrom طَوَارئِsudden misfortunes دَهْرِهِits time
وَمِمَّاand from what تُجِدُّbring anew الحَادِثَاتُcalamities الدَّوَاهِمُoverwhelming
Ah, alas for my heart at the sudden blows of its days,
And at what overwhelming calamities bring anew!
أَفِيis it in الحَقِّtruth أَنِّيthat I لاnot أَرَىsee اليَوْمَtoday أَحمداAhmad
مُقِيماًdwelling وَهَذَاwhile this قَصْرُpalace of أَحْمَدَAhmad قَائِمُstanding
Is it true that I do not see Ahmad today
Dwelling here, though this palace of Ahmad still stands;
وَأنيand that I إِذَاwhenever مَاemphatic particle رُمْتُI seek رِيّاًquenching لِظَمْأَتِيfor my thirst
إِلَىfor مُلْتَقَاهُmeeting him عَزَّis hard to attain مَاwhat أَنَاI رَائِمُseeking
And that whenever I seek to slake my thirst
For meeting him, what I seek is beyond reach;
وَأَنِّيand that I بلاwithout سَلوَىsolace سِوَىexcept مَاwhat يُعِيدُهُbrings it back
لِيَto me الفِكْرُthought يَقَظَاناًawake كَأَنِّيas though I حَالِمُdreaming
And that I have no solace save what
Thought brings back to me, awake as though I dream?
مَلأْتُI filled عُيونِيmy eyes أَمْسِyesterday مِنْهُfrom him نَضارَةًradiance
وَلِلْبِشْرِand for gladness نُورٌa light فِيin مُحَيَّاهُhis face بَاسِمُsmiling
Yesterday I filled my eyes with his radiance,
And a smiling light of joy was on his face.
فَكَانَso was التَّلاقِيthe meeting أَمْسِyesterday أخِرَthe last عَهْدِنَاour time together
وَلَمْand not يَكُwas فِيin الحِسبَانِthe reckoning مَاwhat الغَيْبُthe unseen كَاتِمُconcealing
So yesterday's meeting was our last,
And we had not reckoned with what the unseen concealed.
تَوَلَّىdeparted السَّرِيُّthe noble man السَّمْحُthe generous one أَيَّامَin the days of سَاْمِهِhis peace (uncertain reading)

Gone is the noble man, generous in his days of peace [uncertain reading],
And mighty, all-conquering whenever he clashed.
تَوَلَّىdeparted مُجِيبُanswering العَزْمِresolve إِنْif تَدْعُهُcalls him العُلَىnoble heights

Gone is he whose resolve answered when noble heights called him,
And the man of judgment when ruthless turns of fate descended.
وَلَكِنَّand yet مِنْfrom among أَبْنَائِهِhis sons خَلَفاًa successor لَهُto him

Yet among his sons a successor to him
Is hoped for, and God's grace abides in the house.

They are the growing blossoms, and Khalifa
Will surely guard them till the bud-sheaths split open.

May his Lord's care guard him and grant him joy,
And may mercies water the dust of that departed one.
