نَظْرَةٌa glance فِيinto العَلاَءthe heights يَاO حُسْنَthe beauty of مَاwhat
نَظْرَةٌ فِي العَلاَء يَا حُسْنَ مَا
تَكْشِفُreveals لِلْعَيْنِto the eye نَظْرَةٌa glance فِيinto العَلاَءِthe heights
تَكْشِفُ لِلْعَيْنِ نَظْرَةٌ فِي العَلاَءِ
A glance on high—oh, how lovely is what
a glance on high reveals to the eye!
هذِهِthis لَيْلَةٌa night تُمَثَّلis portrayed فِيin حَفْلٍa gathering مِنَof
هذِهِ لَيْلَةٌ تُمَثَّل فِي حَفْلٍ مِنَ
الزَّهْرِthe blossoms حُلْوَةِlovely الجَوزاءِal-Jawza (a constellation)
الزَّهْرِ حُلْوَةِ الجَوزاءِ
This is a night: portrayed amid a gathering of
blossoms is lovely al-Jawza.
فَهْيَso she تَسْرِيjourneys by night وَقَدْand already تَهَاوَتْswayed بِأَكَالِيلَwith garlands
فَهْيَ تَسْرِي وَقَدْ تَهَاوَتْ بِأَكَالِيلَ
وَجَرَّتْand trailed ذَيْلاًa train مِنَof اللأْلاءِglittering light
وَجَرَّتْ ذَيْلاً مِنَ اللأْلاءِ
So she journeys by night, swaying with garlands,
and trailing a train of glittering light,
فِيin مُحيطٍan ocean مِنَof السَّناءِradiance وَحِبيبٍand a beloved
فِي مُحيطٍ مِنَ السَّناءِ وَحِبيبٍ
خَافِقِpulsing الجَانِبَيْنِon both sides بالأَسْنَاءِwith beams of light
خَافِقِ الجَانِبَيْنِ بالأَسْنَاءِ
in an ocean of radiance, and with a beloved
whose two sides pulse with beams of light.
وَعُبَابٌand a surging sea مَاnot مَاجَsurged إِلاَّexcept بِإِبْراقِwith the flashing of
وَعُبَابٌ مَا مَاجَ إِلاَّ بِإِبْراقِ
أَسَارِيرِهِits features مِنَfrom السَّرَّاءِdelight
أَسَارِيرِهِ مِنَ السَّرَّاءِ
And a sea that surges only with the flashing
of its features in delight.
فَلَكٌa firmament لاnot يُحَدُّis bounded إِلاَّexcept إِذَاif مَاever
فَلَكٌ لا يُحَدُّ إِلاَّ إِذَا مَا
كَانَit were حَدَّthe limit of قُصُورِthe short reach of طَرَفِthe gaze of الرَّائِيthe beholder
كَانَ حَدَّ قُصُورِ طَرَفِ الرَّائِي
A firmament without bounds, unless
its bound be where the beholder's gaze falls short.
مَلأَتْهُhave filled it كُبْرىthe greatest of الدَّرَارِيthe brilliant stars والصُّغرَىand the smallest
مَلأَتْهُ كُبْرى الدَّرَارِي والصُّغرَى
ازْدَهَاراًwith bloom فِيin العَالَمِthe universe اللاَّنِهَائِيthe infinite
ازْدَهَاراً فِي العَالَمِ اللاَّنِهَائِي
The greater and lesser brilliant stars have filled it
with bloom in the infinite universe.
فِيكَin you يَاO لَيْلُnight كَمْhow often تَرَىbeholds العَيْنُthe eye
فِيكَ يَا لَيْلُ كَمْ تَرَى العَيْنُ
آياتِsigns of جَمَالِbeauty مُجْدٍenriching وَرَوَاءِand splendor
آياتِ جَمَالِ مُجْدٍ وَرَوَاءِ
In you, O night, how often the eye beholds
signs of enriching beauty and splendor!
ذَاكَthat عُرْسٌa wedding وَفِيand in الحِمَىthe homeland اليومَtoday عُرْسٌa wedding
ذَاكَ عُرْسٌ وَفِي الحِمَى اليومَ عُرْسٌ
يَتَرَاءَىis reflected دَانِيهاthe nearer of them فِيin النَّائِيthe distant one
يَتَرَاءَى دَانِيها فِي النَّائِي
That is a wedding, and in the homeland today is a wedding,
the nearer reflected in the distant.
تُوشِكُis about to الزِّينَةُthe adornment البَدِيعَةُexquisite أَنْto
تُوشِكُ الزِّينَةُ البَدِيعَةُ أَنْ
تَخْلِطَmingle مَاwhat بَيْنَbetween أَرْضِنَاour earth وَالسَّماءِand the sky
تَخْلِطَ مَا بَيْنَ أَرْضِنَا وَالسَّماءِ
The exquisite adornment is about to
mingle our earth with heaven.
يَاO عَرُوساًbride تَسْمُوrises إلىto عَرْشِهَاher throne فِيin
يَا عَرُوساً تَسْمُو إلى عَرْشِهَا فِي
أَيِّwhat حُسْنٍbeauty يَسْبِيcaptivates وَأَيِّand what حَيَاءِmodesty
أَيِّ حُسْنٍ يَسْبِي وَأَيِّ حَيَاءِ
O bride, rising to her throne in
what captivating beauty, and what modesty!
وَالوَصِيفَاتُand the bridesmaids فِيin اقْتِفَاءِfollowing خُطَاهَاher footsteps
وَالوَصِيفَاتُ فِي اقْتِفَاءِ خُطَاهَا
نُسَّقordered ranks مِنْof نَضَارَةٍfreshness وَبَهَاءِand splendor
نُسَّق مِنْ نَضَارَةٍ وَبَهَاءِ
And the bridesmaids, following her footsteps,
are ranks of freshness and splendor.
وَمَجَالِيand the scenes of الأَفْراحِjoy لَوْif صَوَّرَتْهَاthey portrayed them
وَمَجَالِي الأَفْراحِ لَوْ صَوَّرَتْهَا
لَمْdid not تَزِدْهَاenhance them قَرَائِحُthe creative gifts of الشُّعرَاءِthe poets
لَمْ تَزِدْهَا قَرَائِحُ الشُّعرَاءِ
And the scenes of joy—were they portrayed,
the poets' gifts could add nothing to them.
طَالَعَتْنَاrose before us الجَوْزَاءُal-Jawza (a constellation) فِيin وَجْهَكِyour face السَّاshining (word begins)
طَالَعَتْنَا الجَوْزَاءُ فِي وَجْهَكِ السَّا
طِعِ(completes 'shining') نُوراًwith light وَشَمْسُكِand your sun الوَضَّاءِradiant
طِعِ نُوراً وَشَمْسُكِ الوَضَّاءِ
Al-Jawza has risen before us in your face,
shining with light, along with your radiant sun.
فَابْلَغِيso attain مَاwhat رَجَوتْyou hoped for فِيin العَيْشِlife مِنَof
فَابْلَغِي مَا رَجَوتْ فِي العَيْشِ مِنَ
نِعْمَةِease of بَالٍmind وبَهْجَةٍand joy وَصَفَاءِand serenity
نِعْمَةِ بَالٍ وبَهْجَةٍ وَصَفَاءِ
So attain what you have hoped for in life:
ease of mind, joy, and serenity.
قَسَّمَordained اللهُGod أَنْthat تُزَفيِّyou be led as a bride إلىto زَينِthe pride of الشَّبَـthe young men (word begins)
قَسَّمَ اللهُ أَنْ تُزَفيِّ إلى زَينِ الشَّبَـ
ـابِ(completes 'young men') الأَعِزَّةِnoble الأَكُفَّاءِworthy
ـابِ الأَعِزَّةِ الأَكُفَّاءِ
God ordained that you be led as a bride to the pride of young
men, noble and worthy.
