يُرَادُis required مِنَfrom الشَّبَابِthe young اليَوْمَtoday جُهْدٌan effort
لأُمَّتِهِمْfor their nation بِهِin it أَمَلٌhope عَظِيمُgreat
An effort is required of the young today,
In which their nation places great hope.
فَإِنْso if يَبْرُزْemerges لَهُمْfor them فَضْلٌmerit جَدِيدٌnew
فَلَيْسَthen it is not لِيَجْمَدَto stagnate الفَضْلُthe merit القَدِيمُold
So if new merit emerges among them,
It is not that old merit should grow inert.
وَهَذِيand this حِكْمَةٌwisdom جُلِيَتْwas revealed بِأَزْهَىin the brightest

And this is wisdom revealed in the brightest
Of its manifestations, with the sage appointed:
فَتًىa young man قَبْلَbefore الكُهُولَةِmiddle age حَلَّمَتْهُmade him mature
شَوغِلُهُhis occupations الكَبِيرَةُgreat وَالهُمُومُand cares
A youth whom, before middle age,
His weighty occupations and cares made mature.
لَقَدْindeed سُنَتْshone سَجَايَاهُhis virtues وَزَادَتْand increased
مَحَاسِنَهَاtheir beauty المَعَارِيفُgood deeds وَالعُلُومُand learning
His virtues have indeed shone, and grown
In beauty through good deeds and learning.
يَسُرُّdelights القَلْبَthe heart مُخْبِرُهُhis inner nature وَيَحْلُوand is pleasing
تَوَقُّرُهُhis dignity وَمَنْظَرُهُand his appearance الوَسِيمُhandsome
His inner nature delights the heart, and pleasing are
His dignity and his handsome appearance.
إِلَىtoward غَايَاتِهِhis goals يَمْضِيhe proceeds بِعَزْمٍwith resolve
وَلَيْسَand not بِفَائِزٍa winner إِلاَّexcept العَزْومُthe resolute
Toward his goals he moves with resolve,
And none but the resolute succeeds.
يُصَرِّفُhe applies رَأْيَهُhis judgment فِيin كُلِّevery أَمْرٍmatter
كَأَحْسَنِas well as مَاthe way يُصَرِّفُهُhe applies it الحَزُومُthe prudent man
He applies his judgment to every matter
As skillfully as the most prudent man.
يُطَوِّعُhe tames مَاwhat عَصَىdefied التَّدْبِيرَplanning لُطْفاًgently
وَمَاand not بِالسَّهْلِat all easy أَكْثَرِmost of مَاwhat يَرُومُhe seeks
Gently he tames what defies planning,
And most of what he seeks is far from easy.
تَقِيٌّdevout لاnot يُدَاجِيhe dissembles فِيin تُقَاهُhis piety
عَزِيزُnoble النَّفْسِof soul لِلْشَّكْوَىabout complaints كَتُومُreticent
Pious, he practices no deceit in his piety;
Noble of soul, he keeps his complaints unspoken.
كَفَاهُit suffices him فِيin الفَخَارِpride وَأَنْand that أَبَاهُhis father
عَلَىabove أَمْثَالِهِhis peers الخُلْقُcharacter الكَرِيمُnoble
It is pride enough for him that his father,
Setting him above his peers, is noble character.
كَفَاهُit suffices him أَنَّthat جِيلاًa generation قَدْalready بَنَاهُhe built it
لِنَهْضَةِfor the revival of قَوْمِهِhis people جِيلٌa generation قَويمُupright
Enough for him that a generation he has built
For his people's revival is an upright generation.
نَمَاit grew وَزَكَاand flourished عَلَىaccording to أَرْقَىthe loftiest مِثَالٍmodel

It grew and flourished after the loftiest model,
As its knowledgeable founder desires.
فَفِيso in الغَدِtomorrow يَكْبُرُwill grow الأَحْدَاثُthe young مِنْهُamong it

So tomorrow the young among it will grow,
And the ignoble age will mend its ways.
بِأَيِّwith what مَظَاهِرِmarks of التَّكْرِيمِhonor يُجْزَىis rewarded
What marks of honor could reward
That immense endeavor as it deserves?
وَإِنِّيand I بِاسْمِin the name of إِخْوَانٍbrothers كِرَامٍnoble
يُفَارِقُهُمْhe leaves them وَذِكْرَاهُand his memory تُقِيمُremains
And I, in the name of noble brothers
Whom he leaves, though his memory remains—

He tended their union's affairs, seeking illumination,
Yet his is merit of the truest kind—

Congratulate him on his office and wish him
Lasting success in doing good.

And I offer our fullest thanks to him
Who is the cherished head and leader—
