Poetry is bereaved, now that Hassan lies at rest,

And in Jerusalem the arena stands empty.

Palestine grieved; before his death, never

Had her valiant people quailed at calamity.

Though their poet has departed, their radiant deeds

Are poetry—what are meters and measures?

True heroes, without a trace of weakness

On the day of defending honor; they have no peers.

If their lands fall short in ancestral glory,

They enrich them; if virtues fail, they lend adornment.

Who would not salute them and exalt their renown,

    Among those whom homelands honor?

    أَوَ مَا بَنُوهَا كُلُّهُمْ إِخْوَانُ

    The nations of the Arab world shared their grief;

Are not all her sons brothers?

And the strongest tie that bonds of compassion forge

Among kindred is the sharing of sorrows.

No wonder Kinana pours out her sorrow,

When the noble among her neighbors are grieving.

She mourns their departed as she mourns her own,

And her public words reveal what she holds within.

The Arab world's calamity in losing its Abu Iqbal

Has made patience and consolation hard to find.

She lost in him her tireless helper, who often

    Sufficed when helpers failed her.

Who will master issuing legal opinions [text uncertain] after its Salim,

In whom lay satisfaction, and in whom reassurance?

Learning makes it clear to those endowed with reason,

And truth and proof shine within it.

The rhymes weep for him, for his inventiveness

Within them, and that embroidery and mastery.

    لا الدُّرُّ يَعْدِلُهُ وَلا الْعِقْيَانُ

    He strung insights into wondrous ornaments;

Neither pearls nor pure gold could equal it.

He would indeed bear necklaces to kings,

So crowns grew jealous of their radiance.

His verse holds wafts of an undying perfume

That neither rose nor sweet basil ever bestowed.

He waters hopes from a heavenly bowl,

So the heart is sober, and the mind intoxicated.

As for his prose, it holds rare delights:

Their meanings charm, their eloquence enthralls.

Virgin works of excellence that captivate you; often

Beauty is stately, yet its power bewitches.

How splendid his eloquent tongue, when there rose

Amid the assemblies his resounding voice!

And the swift sallies and rare gems of his speech—

Ears never tire of hearing them.

Leave aside that lofty literature and all it holds

Of every lovely hue with which it is adorned,

And recall his noble Arab virtues,

Whose bounteous tales the riders carried far:

    Chastity, chivalry, and friendship

That his companions found in no one else.

How noble he was among those who reached the heights

Through their own souls, with Adnan as their forefather.

I bade him farewell before departure; my consolation

Was the hope of return, which fate betrayed.

What is this world, and what are our desires

Before Time—and it is Time indeed!

    هَلْ مِنْ تَجَارِيبِ الصُّرَوفِ أَمَانُ

    It encompasses the hopes with which you amuse yourself;

Is there safety from the trials of changing fortune?

A sanctuary drew him onward, and he was not

Held back by what the body must endure.

So he fulfilled his pilgrimage's obligation [text uncertain], urged on

By longing, while faith sang his caravan onward.

Taking righteous deeds as provision, and his provision

Is among the best that the All-Merciful accepts.

So he fixed his resting place in the Ancient House,

Where forgiveness and divine favor were revealed.

This is the great triumph, and thus

The reward rises in worth when goodness rises.

Temper your grief, Abu al-Mahasin: no parting

In God is estrangement; it is an offering.
