God be praised for a people armored in steadfastness,

who embraced every means of bringing the scattered together.

Time obeys whenever they resolve firmly,

and victory is promised whenever they determine to act.

Do you know a clan that failed, having

united the villages and agreed upon the truth?

Whoever seeks the heights will reach their summit

by persevering; the victor is the persevering one.

Some aspirations, like poetry, are better abandoned

    if only the opening succeeds.

And glory, if nothing worthwhile is gained from it,

is like a scant draught whose final taste is bitter.

If a brave man's strength is part of valor,

then valor, all valor, is a braver character.

Greater than a brave man's service to his country

is the good a donor may do his country.

God be praised for an opportunity and its Abd Aziz!

It arose, and the brilliant, admirable man brought it to fruition.

Whoever calls this an innovation—say, 'An initiative

in goodness, the most spontaneous and original one could seek.'

If an educator does not safeguard children's character,

what can an enforcer or lawgiver accomplish?

Or if refinement of character cannot restrain

the young, will punishment restrain them?

In every land there is a shelter; have we no

hope of matching what others have achieved?

What ails us, that we find other peoples ahead of us,

yet do not follow the example of their deeds?

How noble the building, to whose construction

the generous rushed—and rightly did they rush.

    هُوَ لِلإِبَاءِ مِنَ المَهَانَة مَفْزَعُ

    It is a refuge for chastity from debauchery;

it is a haven for proud dignity from humiliation.

It safeguards the children, the strength of the homeland,

lest a careless soul squander them to its loss.

What is our standing among people? What is our emblem?

Is it those homeless, limping wanderers—

each passing his childhood in hunger,

while young beasts graze in lush groves?

No covering shelters him, and no benefactor is there

but refuse, in which those ribs are clothed.

Egypt's blossoms are delightful, and Egypt's fruits

are ripe for picking; a splendid watering place is the Nile.

What garden is truly fertile if it offers no

drink or sustenance for its frail dependents?

    أَنْتُمْ لَهَا الْهَامَاتُ وَهْيَ الأَذْرُعُ

    The time has come for a community to be shown the way;

you are its heads, and it the arms.

    قَدْ حَانَ أَنْ يَقْوَى الصَّغيرُ الأَضْرَعُ

    The time has come for the poor to be sheltered in a refuge;

the time has come for the frail child to grow strong.

    فَلأَفْتَكِ الْوَحْشِ الَّذي هُوَ أَجْوعُ

    Drive the unlawful away from the lawful, and it will endure for you;

for the deadliest of beasts is the hungriest.

Shield your good names from a just reckoning,

for the most widespread praise may prove false.

That misery, coming morning and evening,

is among the things that torment and wound souls.

Let it vanish as drought vanishes, with none to mourn it,

and let what we plant flourish in its place,

so grief's flames may subside within our vitals,

and tears may cease to furrow cheeks.

O you who competed in hastening toward generosity—

and the noblest are swiftest to charity—

does the homeland reject your differing groups,

when merit is shared among you all?

In Egypt, from this day, a most radiant scene

of glory shall be witnessed and heard of through the ages.

She is exalted; among her loftiest glories is that

all faiths have risen to uphold her honor.

Like a mighty spreading tree whose root is one,

and whose branches take different paths into the sky,

through the rays and dew they brought,

the trunks grew, their unity held intact.

I fell short in likening Egypt to a tree:

she is a garden, and her plants are varied.

All the beauties found in flowers are hers,

and her fragrance wafts abroad with every scent.

    That diversity benefits the citizen

when affection and purpose are one.

    وَلِنَفْسِهِ المُتَزَهِّدُ المُتَوَرِّعُ

    He who redeems his homelands belongs to his brothers;

and the ascetic, scrupulously pious man belongs to himself.

The acts of worship souls offer their Lord are nothing

but maidens, the best of them veiled.

But those who unveil themselves for a wise purpose—

their veil is the most radiant light.

O my lords, many are the roads to success

before whoever strives, and this is a broad highway.

    أَوْ يَبْغِ إِرْضَاءَ الْهُدَى فالمَوْضِعُ

    Whoever seeks to please generosity—now is its hour;

or seeks to please right guidance—here is the place.

    Generous Egypt—will her faultfinder say

'She was miserly toward the most beneficial cause'?

    وَبِكمْ تُوَقَّى الْحَادِثَاتُ وَتُمْنَعُ

    You are her crest, and you are her heart;

through you she is shielded and defended against calamities.

Forward! Do not hang back! Forward! Do not

    delay—the noblest is the volunteer.

If our generosity cannot be counted on

on the day when honor calls, bleak is what we may expect.

This is my thanks to you, in pure verse,

with nothing decked in matching rhymes or ornament.

It is pure inspiration, its beginning like its end,

the unforced flow of nature, free of artifice.
