قَوَامُكِyour figure لاnot يُعَادِلُهُequals it قَوامُa figure
وَمِنْand among أَوْصَافِكِyour qualities الحُسْنُbeauty التَّمَامُperfection
No figure can rival yours.
And perfect beauty is among your qualities.
وَفِيand in عَيْنَيْكِyour eyes سِحْرٌmagic بَابِلِيٌّBabylonian
فَلاso not يُدْرَىis known أَمَاءٌis it water أَمْor ضِرَامُblazing fire
And in your eyes is Babylonian magic;
None can tell: is it water or flame?
وَفِيand in الأَهْدَابِthe eyelashes ضَعْفٌweakness وَانْكِسَارٌand languor
فَكَيفَso how تُمِيتُنَاkill us منهاfrom them السِّهَامُthe arrows
And in the lashes are weakness and languor—
Then how do arrows from them kill us?
وَفِيكِand in you عُبُوسَهُa frown (text reads: his frown) تَحْلُوis sweet لَدَيْنَاto us
فَكَيْفَthen how إِذَاwhen جَلاكِreveals you لَنَاto us ابْتِسَامُa smile
Even a frown on you is sweet to us;
How, then, when a smile reveals you to us?
وَفِيكِand in you لِكُلِّfor every عَيْنٍeye كُلِّevery مَعْنىًcharm
تُبَاحُare freely surrendered لَهُfor it النُّفُوسَsouls وَلاand not يُرَامُcan be attained
And in you every eye finds every charm
For which souls are freely given, yet which remains beyond reach.
مَحَاسِنُbeauties دُونَهَاbarring access to them ثَارَاتُblood-feuds قَوْمٍa people
فَمَاso no لِفَتىًfor a youth سِوَىexcept النَّظَرَlooking اغْتِنَامُgain
Beauties guarded by a people's blood-feuds—
So a youth can win nothing but a glance.
I concealed (vocalized: you concealed) هَوَاكِlove for you دَهْراًfor ages لاnot لِخَوْفٍout of fear
وَلاnor أَنَاI مَنْone whom يُرَوِّعُهُfrightens him الحِمَامُdeath
I hid my love for you for ages, not from fear;
Nor am I one whom death can frighten.
وَلَكِنيbut I حَرَصْتَI took care (vocalized: you took care) عَلَيْكِof you مِنْهُمْfrom them
وَلَوْand even if أَدَّىdid away بِمُهْجَتِيَwith my life الغَرَامُpassion
But I sought to shield you from them,
Even if passion were to cost me my life.
وَكَمْand how often عَاتَبْتُI reproached فِيهِover it النَّفْسَmyself لَوْماًin blame
فَإِنْbut if عُوقِبْتُI was punished رَاعَنِيalarmed me المُلامُthe reproach
And how often I reproached myself for it,
Yet if I was chastised, the blame would appall me—
كَجِرْحٍlike a wound قَدْperhaps أُلَطِّفْهُI soothe it بِلَمْسِيwith my touch
وَإِنْbut if هُوَit مَسَّهُtouches it غَيْرِيsomeone other than me أُضَامُI am hurt
Like a wound I may soothe with my touch,
But if another touches it, I am hurt.
ظَلَلْتُI continued عَلَيْهِover it أُخْفِيهِI conceal it وَأَشْقَىand I suffer
إِلَىuntil أَنْthat بَاتَbecame وَهْوَwhile it بِنَاwithin us سِقَامُa sickness
I kept it hidden and suffered over it,
Until it became a sickness within us.
فَمَاso not أَنْسَىI forget تَلاقَيْنَاour meeting هَجِيعاًduring the night
بِلاwithout وَعْدٍan appointment كَمَاas شَاءَwilled الْهَيَامُpassionate love
I cannot forget our meeting in the night,
Without an appointment, as passion willed.
كَأَنَّاas though we شُعْلَتَانِtwo flames إِذَاwhen اعْتَنَقْنَاwe embraced
عَلَىin ظَمَاءِthirst فَلَمْyet not يُرْوَwas quenched الأَوَامُburning thirst
As though we were two flames when we embraced,
Athirst, yet our burning thirst remained unquenched.
وَمَاand not أَنْthat تَنْطَفِيis extinguished نَارٌa fire بِنَارٍby a fire
فَيُشْفِينَاso it might heal us التَّعَانُقُembracing one another وَاللِّزَامُand clinging
And fire cannot be quenched by fire,
So embracing and clinging cannot heal us.
رَعَاهُmay He preserve it اللهGod لَيْلاًa night مِنْهُfrom it ذُقْنَاwe tasted
نَعِيمَthe bliss السُّهُدِof wakefulness وَالرُّقْبَاءُwhile the watchers نَامُواthey slept
May God bless that night, from which we tasted
The bliss of wakefulness, while the watchers slept.
فَكَانَso there was مِنَfrom الظَّلامِthe darkness لَنَاfor us ضِيَاءٌlight
وَكَانَand there was مِنَfrom الضِّيَاءِthe light لَنَاfor us ظَلامُdarkness
Thus from darkness came light for us,
And from light came darkness for us.
