Hamid, it is enough for greatness that you be counted when
Lebanon’s illustrious, peerless men are numbered.
أَتْحَفْتَنِيyou gifted me بِبَيَانٍwith eloquence صِغْتَهyou fashioned it عَجَباًa marvel
وَلِيand for me بِهِthrough it وَلِمَنْand for whoever أَهْدَاهُgave it تَخْلِيدُimmortalization
You graced me with eloquence you fashioned into a marvel;
Through it, both I and its giver are immortalized.
هُمَاthey both وِسَامَانِtwo medals مِنْof مَجْدٍglory أَعَزَّهُمَاthe more precious of them
مَاthat which قَلَّدَadorned الرَّوحَthe soul لاَnot مَاthat which قُلِّدَwas adorned with الجِّيدُthe neck
They are two medals of glory; the more precious of the two
Is what adorns the soul, not what is hung about the neck.
