لِيَنْتَشِرْlet it unfurl بَعْدَafter طَيٍِّfolding ذَلِكَthat الْعَلَمُthe flag
وَلْيَنْتَعِشْand let it revive أَمَلٌa hope يَكْبُوmakes stumble بِهِwith it الألمُpain
Let that banner unfurl again after it was folded away.
Let that flag unfurl after being folded;
And let hope revive—a hope before which pain stumbles.
And let the hope that pain makes falter revive.
لاno خَطْبَcalamity أَكْبَرُgreater مِمَّاthan what رَاعَalarmed أَثْبَتَكُمْyour most steadfast
لَكِنْbut أُعِيذُكُمُI seek protection for you أَنْthat تَضْعُفَgrow weak الْهِمَمُthe resolves
No calamity is greater than that which dismayed the most steadfast among you.
No calamity is greater than what has shaken your most steadfast;
Yet I adjure you not to let your high resolve weaken.
But I pray you be spared a weakening of resolve.
ذَاكَthat اللِّوَاءُthe banner الَّذِيwhich لُفَّwas wrapped الرَّئِيسُthe leader بِهِin it
زِيدَتْwere increased لَهُfor it الْيَوْمَtoday فِيupon أَعْنَاقِنَاour necks ذِمَمُobligations
That is the banner in which they wrapped the leader;
That banner in which the leader was wrapped—
today our obligations to it have multiplied upon our necks.
Today our necks bear added obligations toward it.
وَعَادَand became أَوْلَىmore deserving بإِجْلالٍof reverence وَتَفْدِيَةٍand self-sacrifice
مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere أُدْرِجَwas enfolded فِيهِwithin it ذَلِكَthat الْعَلَمُthe luminary
It has become still worthier of our reverence and sacrifice,
And it has become more deserving of reverence and sacrifice,
since that eminent figure was enfolded within it.
Since that luminary was enfolded within it.
إِنيindeed I أَرَىsee وَجْهَthe face of مِصْرٍEgypt تَحْتَbeneath غُرَّتِهِits white blaze
يُخْفِيhides تَقَرُّحَthe rawness of جَفْنَيْهِits two eyelids وَيَبْتَسِمُand smiles
I see Egypt’s face beneath its radiant crest,
Indeed, I see Egypt's face beneath its white blaze,
hiding the sores of its eyelids, yet smiling.
Hiding the rawness of its eyelids and smiling.
وَأَجْتَلِيand I behold قَلْبَهَاher heart مَاemphatic particle بَيْنَamong أَنْجُمِهِits stars

And I behold her heart amid its stars:
And I behold her heart among its stars,
her heart throbs proudly, with Saad portrayed upon it.
Quivering with pride, with Saad imprinted within it.
لاlet not تَأْخُذِtake الْغُمَّةُthe anguish الْكُبْرَىthe greatest مَآخِذَهَاits grip
مِنْكُمْof you وَإِنْand even though صَغُرَتْhave grown small تِلْقَاؤهَاbeside it الْغُمَمُthe sorrows
Do not let the supreme sorrow exact its full toll
Let not the greatest anguish take hold
from you, though all other sorrows are small beside it.
Of you, even though other sorrows are small beside it.
تِلْكَthat النَّوَىparting إِنْif رَأَيْتُمْyou perceive صَدْعَهَاits breach حَسُنَتْwill prove good

That parting—if you behold the breach it wrought—has brought a happy
That parting, if you perceive its breach, will prove good
outcome for Egypt; for others, the outcome is regret.
In its outcome for Egypt; for others, the outcome is regret.
أَمَاتَhas he died? سَعْدٌSaad وَرُوحُwhile the spirit of الشَّعْبِthe people بَاقِيَةٌstill living
وَالرَّأْيُand opinion مُؤْتَلِفٌin accord وَالشَّمْلُand the ranks مُلْتَئِمُunited
Can Saad be dead while the people’s spirit endures,
Has Saad died, while the people's spirit lives on,
while counsel is united and the ranks are knit together?
And views are in accord and the ranks are united,
وَالرَّمْزُand the symbol بَاقٍenduring وَذَاكَand that الصَّوْتُvoice نَسْمَعُهُwe hear it
مَهْمَاhowever تَنَوَّعَتِvary الأَصْوَاتُthe voices وَالْكَلِمُand the words
The emblem remains, and still we hear that voice,
And the symbol endures, and we hear that voice,
however varied the voices and the words.
However varied the voices and words may be?
إِنَّindeed اتِّحَادَthe union of قُوَاكُمْyour forces بَعْدَهُafter him عِوَضٌrecompense
مِمَنْfor the one who دَهَىafflicted مِصْرEgypt فِيهِthrough his loss الثُّكْلُbereavement وَاليَتَمُand orphanhood
Indeed, the union of your strength after him is recompense
Indeed, the union of your forces after him is recompense
for him through whose loss bereavement and orphanhood struck Egypt.
For him whose loss afflicted Egypt with bereavement and orphanhood.
وَالبِرُّand devotion مِنْكُمْfrom you بِهِtoward him بِرdevotion بِأَنْفُسِكُمْtoward yourselves

Your devotion to him is devotion to yourselves:
And your devotion to him is devotion to yourselves:
either existence in its fullest meaning, or nonexistence.
Either existence in its true sense, or nothingness.
