Do not deny the groans within my strings.

No desires remain for me in life.

My loved ones have gone, some following

others; the best were the first to go.

    أَفَمَا بِهَا سَأَمٌ مِنَ التَّكرَارِ

    The recurring calamities of time have worn me thin;

have they, then, no weariness of repetition?

I am a hostage in life; who will ransom me?

And I am the captive; who will loosen my bonds?

My life has not been long in span, yet I

feel that it exceeds the span of lifetimes.

Gabriel—alas, my son!—has gone before me; within me is

bereavement, and bereavement stings like fire.

In his father's house I witnessed his growth,

when he toddled, his nails still tender.

And I saw how, after him, a mother prepared

her only son for glory and for dangers.

No wonder that children brought up

for God and their homelands should prove truly great.

Whatever I forget, I will not forget the refined woman whose

graces were safeguarded by a crown of dignity.

A mother among those rare women, whose

sons numbered the marvels of the ages.

    وَمِنَ الشمُوسِ أَشِعَّة الأَقْمَارِ

    They raised them and illumined them with their own light;

and from the suns come the rays of the moons.

O bearer of Gabriel's death-news, truly his death announcement

is the harshest thing the hand of fate has written.

    مَا لِلحُرُوفِ يَثِبْنَ وَثبَ شرَارِ

    Indeed, these letters make my eyes bleed;

why do the letters leap like sparks?

What a shock throughout the Arab world

at the setting of that vanishing star!

His loss weighed heavily; there was not an eye

but wept for him in a torrent of tears.

How great the sorrow in Egypt, if sorrow could pay

the rightful reward of a steadfast struggler!

She marched to his funeral; no nation had been seen

in a spectacle like that vast procession.

O you who restored this East, after a cloud

had veiled it for an age, to a fountainhead of light!

Had the press done you justice—the press that through you became

'Her Majesty'—it would have crowned you with laurel.

Your father was first upon its racecourse,

and to you passed the lead upon that course.

And perhaps your successor, now that the tracks

are clear to him, will run along those tracks.

What did you do, having inherited a newspaper

on which you could live in abundance and prosperity?

Its stability did not satisfy you; indeed you saw

that stagnation is the ally of stability.

So you pressed forward in improving it, and did not

shrink back despite difficulties and dangers.

And you raised it as a beacon for all the world,

reaching them repeatedly with its roaming ray.

    وَاليَوْمَ أَضْحَى دَوْلَةً فِي دَارِ

    Yesterday its office was a little house;

and today it has become a state within a house.

What a difference between a newspaper whose texts

and commentaries pour forth in rivers,

and a newspaper to which, from every star's rising-place,

    the freshest news is sent!

It is a display of events, near

and far, every morning of every day.

It is an arena with a far-reaching course

for opponents of a view and for its supporters.

Within it, defenders of every truth are guaranteed

    freedom of inclinations and ideas.

'Where is what is right?' is the quest; on the way to it lie

the toil of minds and the contention of free people.

Acquaint with what lies in people's hearts all who have

a concern in it; for good lies in disclosure.

Gaudy glitter may bewitch the eyes, and

the eyes' enchantment may veil inward sight.

But truth's judgment proves sound in the end

    in its assessment of worth.

Then the people entrust their affairs

to one they select willingly and by choice.

    وَعَهِيدُهَا للفَخْرِ والتَّذكارِ

    Egypt's Al-Ahram: its present form brings her new life;

and its ancient form is for pride and remembrance.

Gabriel is its tireless guardian, his figure

in the lofty watchtower, behind a curtain.

Egypt is his love; he lives for her, and his delight is what

delights her, in public and in secret.

And for Egypt are all he earns, all he builds, and all

the work in which he joins late afternoons to predawn hours.

    لا شَيءَ إِلاَّ مِصْرُ فِي الأَمْصَارِ

    Among peoples, there is none but his people;

among lands, there is none but Egypt.

This is the journalist, though he is,

in another guise, one of the merchants:

one of those who bring prosperity wherever they mediate

    among people, not those who bring hardship;

and of the sincere ones who benefit their homelands

through integrity in receiving and issuing.

His merchandise was excellent, and his profit doubled

through the seller's generosity and the buyer's gratitude.

The alms in his spending grow so numerous

that the running account fails to reckon them.

Let no people look upon one great through his deeds

with the eyes of petty menials.

For the prodigious squanderer, in their reckoning,

was nothing but a prodigious replenisher.

The press is the arena of pens, not

    a casting-ground for lot-arrows or a playground for gamblers.

With it, shots are fired from every bow; yet

there is no bow but what the Maker has carved.

Or have we not seen it build kingdoms

and exalt some lands above other lands?

O eulogizers of Gabriel, among his peers

in merit and among his righteous brothers,

you have done him justice with this remembrance; how

worthy he is of immortality and honor!

Enough for our hopes is what his Al-Ahram has secured

for his country of honor and pride.

And may it, through his descendant after him, grant him

assurance for his memory and peaceful repose.
