I keep vigil in the garden while it sleeps.

It spends the night in darkness’s coolness, at ease.

Whenever I come to it with a weeping heart,

my tears grow clear as its water, while it smiles.

I seek solace there from an affliction

which the long passage of time has not eased.

O my resolve against sorrow, and my forbearance,

come to my aid against ruthless calamities!

    رِي وَأَفْنَتْهُ نَارُهَا فِي الَملاحِمْ

    The turns of my days have overcome my patience;

their fire has consumed it in the battles.

Quarter! Quarter! I have cast down my sword

and furled the banner in a humbled man’s surrender.

Youth betrayed my resolve, and my weakness took revenge

upon my steadfastness; how can one like me resist?

Indeed, whoever has fresh youth for his sword—

youth’s flaws are notches in its blade.

And he whose armor is a tender heart

is wounded whether assailed or attacking.

O garden, be peace to my heart

and a refuge from unrelenting misery.

How still the dew, how playful the light,

and how fearful the hovering shadows!

Drooping flowers—I seem to see them

drunk on their own breath within their calyxes.

And a clear pool, with a fence raised

around it by tall, upright, spreading trees.

White birds coo to one another upon it,

swimming, while beneath them the stars float.

Wherever they glide, their path is necklaces

strung from eye sockets and smiling mouths.

How lovely the full moon, appearing as a companion,

like a beloved returning after an absence.

How lovely its painting of creation, like the fairest

that the eye beholds upon a painter’s page.

How lovely the water, with the lamps within it,

like fingers that it adorns with rings.

A paradise from which troubles have departed,

virginal, untouched by harm or forbidden deeds.

    إِنْ دَعَاهَا الصَّبَاحُ قَامَتْ تُنَادِمْ

    Its only inhabitants are beautiful birds;

if morning calls them, they rise to make merry.

And light surges in the water, until

you see it as though it were waves colliding.

    And embroidered meadows, like brocade

    whose workmanship fair-wristed women perfected.

    And branches swayed by breezes,

like cradles rocked by tender mothers.

This is my solitude; I flee to it

from sorrow’s arena and injustice’s course.

Here I contemplate two forms that dwell

in a sky grown clear beyond the clouds.

Here I meet the twin phantoms of my beloveds,

    buried within my grief-silenced heart,

where hypocrisy has no eye, nor malice

an ear, nor slander a mouth.

Ah, Fani—and all who have lived must perish—

where have those noble virtues gone?

An angel passed nobly through life

and departed from it like a victor.

A flower, scarcely having completed one spring,

withered while her peers were supple and tender.

O bride, whose months of serenity passed

so swiftly, like a dreamer’s dream,

your lover gave you a cup to drink, never

imagining it held anything but the proper remedy.

An error fate intended; your redeemer

committed it contrary to his intent.

So you lost life as one loses a precious thing

scorned by a noble, resolute soul.

And your ardent lover drank death from a cup

of grief—its drinker is no sinner.

A cup of death he gave you, and himself drank

from sorrow’s hand, faithful, without regret.

Thus he departed in the prime of life,

an ally of greatness, a companion of mighty deeds.

Glory’s fragrances had given him [a pledge],

and straight afterward the endings failed him.

He spent the night at joy’s summit, and morning found him

in the depths of ever-worsening grief.

He climbed beside the stars; then was hurled from

his zenith by a crushing stroke of fate.

Thus the two lovers departed a dwelling

that is the home of misery, the home of burdens.

They left it without a frown, and they had been

like two smiles upon the faces of the landscape.

They ended their wedding in the darkness of a grave,

and we ended our joys with mourning rites.

Never have people seen a loyalty like this,

against which death’s severing sword recoils.

So rest, you two, in mercy, and leave us

in a life more deserving of a stone-thrower’s mercy.

You two are content, while we pay

the misery of this world our remaining resolve.
