أَضَاءَshone رَجَاءٌa hope فِيin دُجَىthe darkness of الرَّأْيِthought كَاذِبٌfalse
أَضَاءَ رَجَاءٌ فِي دُجَى الرَّأْيِ كَاذِبٌ
فَأَوْحَىand so inspired إِلىto قَلْبِيmy heart السُّرُورَjoy فَأَنْشَدَاand so it sang
فَأَوْحَى إِلى قَلْبِي السُّرُورَ فَأَنْشَدَا
A false hope shone in the darkness of thought;
A false hope shone in the darkness of thought,
it breathed joy into my heart, and my heart broke into song—
And inspired joy in my heart, so my heart sang,
كَمَاjust as غُشَّwas deceived بِالْمِصْبَاحِby the lamp قُمْرِيُّa turtledove حُجْرَةٍa room
كَمَا غُشَّ بِالْمِصْبَاحِ قُمْرِيُّ حُجْرَةٍ
تَوَهَّمهُit mistook it for ضَوْءَthe light of الصَّباحِmorning فَغَرَّدَاand so it warbled
تَوَهَّمهُ ضَوْءَ الصَّباحِ فَغَرَّدَا
just as a chamber’s turtledove, deceived by a lamp,
Just as a turtledove in a room was deceived by the lamp,
mistook it for the light of dawn and began to warble.
Mistaking it for the light of morning, it warbled.
