سَلامٌpeace عَلَىupon القُْدْسِJerusalem وَمَنْand whoever بِهِis within it
عَلَىupon جَامِعِthe uniter of الأَضْدَادِopposites فِيin إِرْثِthe inheritance of حُبِّهِlove for it
Peace upon Jerusalem and those within it,
Upon the uniter of opposites in the inheritance of love for it,
عَلَىupon البَلَدِthe city الطُّهْرِthe pure الَّذِيwhich تَحْتَbeneath تُرْبِهِits soil
قُلُوبٌhearts غَدَتْhave become حَبَّاتُهَاtheir cores بَعْضَpart of تُرْبِهِits soil
Upon the pure city, beneath whose soil
Lie hearts whose cores have become part of its dust.
حَجَجْتَyou made pilgrimage إِلَيْهِto it وَالهَوَىand love يَشْغَلُdistracts الَّذِيthe one who
يَحُجُّmakes pilgrimage إِلَيْهِto it عَنْfrom مَشَقَّاتِthe hardships of دَرْبِهِhis path
You made pilgrimage to it, and love distracts the one
Who makes pilgrimage there from the hardships of his path.
عَلَىupon نَاهِبٍa plunderer لِلأَرْضِof the earth يُهْدِيbestows رَوَائِعاًwonders
إِلَىto كُلِّevery عَيْنٍeye مِنْfrom غَنَائِمِthe spoils of نَهْبِهِits plundering
Upon a plunderer of the earth, bestowing wonders
On every eye from the spoils of its plundering.
فَسُبْحَانَso glory be to مَنْthe One who آتَاهُgave it حُسْناًbeauty كَأَنَّهُas though it
بِهِthrough it أُوتِيَwas granted التَّنْزِيهَtranscendence عَنْbeyond كُلِّevery مُشْبِهِresembling thing
So glory to Him who gave it beauty, as though it
Were thereby exalted beyond all comparison.
تَلُوحُappear لِمَنْto whoever يَرْنُوgazes جِبَالِهِits mountains
أَشَدَّmore firmly اتِّصالاًconnected بِالخُلُودِto eternity وَرَبِّهِand its Lord
To the beholder, its mountains seem
More closely bound to eternity and its Lord.
وَأَيُّand what جَمَالٍbeauty بَيْنَbetween سُمْرَةِthe brownness of طَوْدِهِits mountain
وَخُصْرَةِand greenness (apparently خُضْرَة) وَادِيهِits valley وَحُمْرَةِand the redness of شِعْبِهِits ravine
And what beauty between its mountain's brown hue
And its valley's green and its ravine's red!
وَأَيْنَand where يُرَىcan be seen مَرْجٌa meadow كَمَرْجِlike the meadow of ابْنِIbn (son of) عَامِرٍAmir
بِطِيبِwith the sweetness of مَجَانِيهِits fruits وَزِينَاتِand the adornments of خِصْبِهِits fertility
And where can one see a meadow like Marj Ibn Amir,
With its sweet fruits and the adornments of its fertility?
هُوَit البَيْتُthe House يُؤْتِيgrants سُؤْلَهُhis desire مَنْwhoever يَؤُمُّهُseeks it
فَأَعْظِمْso how great بِهِit is بَيْتاًa house وَأَكْرِمْand how noble بِشَعْبِهِits people are
It is the House that grants whoever seeks it his desire;
So how great a House it is, and how noble its people!
بِهِwithin it مَبْعَثٌa wellspring لِلْحُبِّof love فِيin كُلِّevery مَوْطِيءٍplace trodden
لأَقْدَامِfor the feet of فَادِيthe redeemer of النَّاسِhumankind مِنْout of فَرْطِthe abundance of حُبِّهِhis love
Within it is a wellspring of love at every place trodden
By the feet of him who redeemed humankind out of his overflowing love.
وَلَيْسَand is not غَرِيباًa stranger فِيهِin it إِلاَّexcept بشَخْصِهِin his person
فَتًىa youth زَارَهُvisited it قَبْلاًbefore مِرَاراًmany times بِقَلْبِهِin his heart
And he is no stranger there, save in body—
A youth who had often visited it before in his heart.
تَفَضَّلَshowed kindness أَهْلُوهُits people وَمَاand has not زَالَceased ضَيْفُهُمْtheir guest
نَزِيلاًlodged عَلَىin سَهْلِthe ease of المَكَانِthe place وَرَحْبِهِand its spaciousness
Its people were gracious—and their guest is still
Lodged in a place of ease and ample room—
بِإِكْرَامِby honoring إِنْسَانٍa man قَلِيلٍof little account بِنَفْسِهِby himself
وَلَكِنَّهُand yet he فِيهِمْamong them كَثِيرٌof great account بِصَحْبِهِthrough his companions
By honoring a man of little account alone,
Yet among them, of great account through his companions.
سَأَذْكُرُI shall remember مَاas long as أَحْيَاI live نَعِيمِيmy bliss بِأُنْسِهِمْin their company
وَوِرْدِيand my draught مِنْfrom حُلْوِthe sweetness of اللِّقَاءِthe meeting وَعَذْبِهِand its refreshing sweetness
As long as I live, I shall remember my bliss in their company,
And my draught of the sweetness and freshness of our meeting.
