O my nation, you reject the counsel of a man

Who will not accept for you an unfair share or the divider’s injustice,

And fears the outcome of abasement, while his people

Have incurred it in the thick of the fray.

How grievous for us to see our homelands

In fragments, divided up like spoils.

They have suffered less from their foes than

From souls within them, sick in their resolve,

Who love life in abasement beyond the reach

Of passion in a lovesick, wandering heart.

Wronged in that life—if they do not loathe it

Out of self-respect, how can they loathe the oppressor?

If they are deluded into thinking that escape from harm

    Is an excuse for them, that excuse does not stand;

Or that by stifling their anguish they can achieve an aim—

No lament is more futile than the tears of one who suppresses grief.

O my nation, if you recall a glory past,

Glory is not satisfied by the mourning of doves.
